Hello again,
Could you please try the following:
Download the Cubase Pro 8.5 update, and just leave it on your downloads folder, and then run the Cubase Pro 8.5.15 update and see if that fixes it.
http://download.steinberg.net/downloads ... er_win.exe
Best regards,

No this does not have some effect. But... the 8.5 archive has the missing msi file!Guillermo Navarrete wrote:Hello again,

So I unpacked both and run the the 8.5.15 update (Cubase_8.5.15_64bit_Update.msp) manually and this asks for the location of the missing msi which I could pick from the other archive...
Anyway, it seems the update has only a patch included and so it needs the original installer which is not available on all systems. The best way would be to ask the user for the location of the missing msi instead of stop with the installation and the same time provide a direct download link only for the msi for users running into the same problem) - or make a new update which works for all users

Yea I ran into the same problem. I had to jump through hoops to get it to work.
Funny...the 8.5.10 installer worked fine...and the contents appear similar to this one.

Uninstall just Cubase, and run the big installer. This will search for updates and reinstall Cubase so you will have the latest version.

Hello,
Here it is what we have found out and how to solve it:
This is usually a registry problem or the update installer cannot find the original .msi installation package, like it happens when launching the installer from a compressed archive (which extracts the files in a temp folder).
Possible solutions:
1. Repair the installation from Programs and Features (quite likely, the installer will ask to provide the original .msi, please be sure to be able to locate it by having the DVD inserted or the ISO image mounted)
2. Uninstall Cubase 8.5 from Programs and Features (the application only), re-install it using wither the DVD or the ISO image (to run just the Cubase .msi installer will do) and then run the update again
Best regards,
GN
You are absolutely right users shouldn't be jumping through hoops and we apologise for that. We are currently debugging the issue.thejonsolo wrote:Yea I ran into the same problem. I had to jump through hoops to get it to work.

Hello,
We do run test on our side the problem is that most of our systems do have an installer somewhere therefore the error does not appear.
Best regards,
GN
If you do a google search from the error message you will find that many other software companies and developers have the same issue. We are using the .msi (Microsoft Installer technology). I am not justifying the issue, but something is particularly wrong with this particular update and our developer is currently investigating it.DrumAddict wrote:unbelievabale for Steinberg to put such things and updates out to customer without testing before

Using the first option did the trick. I have the 8.5 update.exe. I unzipped it, ran repair on Programs and Features, when asked for the msi, selected the one from the update. I then updated 8.5.15 without problems.Guillermo Navarrete wrote:Hello,

This isn't a registry issue. The problem is simple and Steinberg should have been able to figure this out themselves within a few minutes, it's sad they can't. The update is looking for the 8.5 msi left by a previous installer, if that isn't where it expects it the installer fails. The problem is a user shouldn't be required to keep the files extracted by the previous installer on their machine, that's ridiculous. Every decent PC user cleans up an installer after they use it. I put the 8.5 installer originally on my desktop, did the install of the 8.5 update and cleaned up the installer (from my desktop) and the extracted folder (which the 8.5 update put on my desktop). I shouldn't be expected to leave that junk there because Steiny is too lazy to include the necessary files in a future update.
To get around this you can run the 8.5 update. You only have to run it to the point that it extracts its files, if you get to where it's having you select a language that's far enough. Then you can run the 8.5.15 update. Then close the 8.5 update after the 8.5.15 update is done.
In no rational world should I be required to leave a bunch of files the installer extracts on my machine so future updates can work. Just include that stuff with the new installer. There isn't much difference between having to download 328mb and 900mb these days.
I also shouldn't be required to troubleshoot tech support issues for Steiny if they can't figure this simple stuff out. Blaming it on the user or registry issues, etc. is not doing due diligence and part of what I pay for when I buy a product that has support is the support itself. If the support isn't going to be very good then charge me less for the product.

Agreed. And another reason why I'm still using 8.0 -- by the time 9.0 is announced, I'll consider moving to a less hassled 8.5 and letting the rest of the customer base beta test v9 for Steinberg.
It is clear Steinberg needs Gumby on the QA team --> (click it) http://i.imgur.com/BvIJ1M5.gif

It's interesting to note that the Mac download is 806 mb compared to the Win's 328 mb - have any Mac users had the same problem?
There is if you have a capped broadband service. We don't all have unlimited download capacity. I don't even have broadband, as such. All my downloads are done via my 'phone (unlimited data!), then copied to my PC. It also has a built-in wi-fi hotspot which my missus uses, but that's capped at 12 gb.DodgingRain wrote: There isn't much difference between having to download 328mb and 900mb these days.
