I kind of wish that you had, you could have then pointed out specifics of why you think that isn't up to par. Maybe I could hear the difference, maybe not.Sampleconstruct wrote:As I was just cutting/editing Glockenspiel samples this morning and after following this thread I had to make a video where Glockenspiel meets Blackhole meets Shimmer, not as a comparison but more as a musical space impro. I also tried integrating Space Master which I hadn't used for years, but the sound was just not up to par with the other 2 so I skipped that.

I just followed my ears, as I wrote, this was not a test, just an impro, just for fun and Space Master didn't like the high Glockenspiel frequencies so much as it's not dense enough and sounds all grainy in the upper frequency ranges, that's one of main reasons I stopped using it actually.ghettosynth wrote:I kind of wish that you had, you could have then pointed out specifics of why you think that isn't up to par. No, I get it, I just wasn't hearing this great difference when I was playing with them. I suspect that it had more to do with my sources. I didn't gry Glockenspiel. I'll try some more subtle sources like acoustic guitar and see how that works.Sampleconstruct wrote:I just followed my ears, as I wrote, this was not a test, just an impro, just for fun and Space Master didn't like the high Glockenspiel frequencies so much as it's not dense enough and sounds all grainy in the upper frequency ranges, that's one of main reasons I stopped using it actually.ghettosynth wrote:I kind of wish that you had, you could have then pointed out specifics of why you think that isn't up to par. Thank you.SLiC wrote:I love valhala shimmer, but I bought blackhole as well at this new low price (under 50 bucks) and have enjoyed playing with it. I think they both found good, but if I could only have one it would be shimmer as it can do the 'blackhole' type large ambient verbs and a lot more. It's all about the base sound you put the reverb on, from a big poly synth patch to a simple accoustic guitar, I can get great results with shimmer (but I do like blackhole as well, not sure I realy need both, but I have enjoyed playing with it and there are some cool presets included)
Based on this and a couple of other posts in this thread, I'll skip BH and go with Shimmer, as long as I can get something similar to BH with Shimmer, I figure, why not? I Doubt I need both.
[EDIT]
Okay, after the recommendations of getting Extraordinary Spaces, I'm giving the BH demo an honest try.

Something like the "Taj Mahal" preset in Shimmer cannot be done with Blackhole because of the missing features (pitch shifting, stereo modes)?

Well, this is fun, still in beta, complete with source. No need to compile, just download the zip, unzip, go into the build directory, unzip, copy to x64/x86 plugin directories. AFAIK, builds are only available for windows. Depends on some stuff that I don't have installed so I couldn't compile it, later. I just thought that some of you might be interested. Glitchy control changes so it's not a replacement for BlackHole.

now: stw reflex pro which was released winter 2011 as a synth maker based gui and an original code base seen 4 updates version 1.0_2.2 from 2011-2012 the developer had to cancel the project through no fault of his own when synthmaker stopped development on there product. the developer took all the original code and or may have even gone so far as a complete rewrite and in summer 2014 released reflex+ version 1.0 since then he has released 4 updates and reflex+ is now at the current version 3.1
this is just my opinion but the sounds i get out reflex+ are really awesome and insanely huge. i never had the same excitement from black hole and far less with shimmer.
reflex+ and omnisphere will take through an ocean of stars!
What is it that you are trying to say? Where is the logical Connection between the sound quality of Black Hole & Shimmer and SynthMaker stopping "development on there [sic] project"?

Well, not that I think that it's all that important but I think that he was just saying that the reverb is being actively developed. The elaboration is to avoid someone saying "well, it wasn't being developed between 2012 and 2014."jens wrote:AstralExistence wrote:ive been demoing both black hole and shimmer and i have to say that after using both neither really sound that good. black hole is old code released in very winter 2012 although it has received an update to 64 bit the actual code remains the same. shimmer was released in fall of 2010 and although there have been a few improvements to its original features, not much has really changed. shimmer does not even have a built in preset system.

Reflex+ seems to be a really nice plugin, but just because it receives added features, filters and bugfixes doesn't mean it is superior to other plugins. What if Blackhole and Shimmer don't need additional features, filters and bugfixes, because they work great the way they work right from the beginning? And what if they could sound superior to Reflex+ when used the right way?ghettosynth wrote:Well, not that I think that it's all that important but I think that he was just saying that the reverb is being actively developed. No offense here - everybody has to make his best choice, but I dislike the thought of one plugin being better because it's being actively developed. I mean: Just because I have the newest and shiniest brush doesn't mean I can paint like DaVinci ...

Just yesterday I had to deal with some Glockenspiel part for a song and as I am demoing Blackhole right now I tried it and it sounded too artificial to me... I ended up using both Crystalizer and Valhalla Plate instead...
it sounds fantastic in your example, but getting it to gel with other acoustic instruments might not be so easy...

Well, his post starts by saying about Blackhole and Shimmer that "after using both neither really sound that good", then talks about how old they are and that "shimmer does not even have a built in preset System"ghettosynth wrote: I think that he was just saying that the reverb is being actively developed. before talking about how Reflex Pro had to be completely rewritten and how Reflex+ receives a lot of updates, before closing by saying that Reflex+ will "take through[sic] an ocean of stars" when being combined with Atmosphere.
Incongruity much?

Trouble is, Simon makes this (and many other things) sound brilliant.
Then I buy it, and fail to make it sound brilliant.
This time, I say NO.

Blackhole on multiple tracks, side by side with VintageVerb.
A total of TEN reverb tracks are being used between the two verbs.
Interesting hearing the 2 together:
