No problem, update for Mac version installed without any issues.

I think Steinberg should hold they're hand up and plead guilty for forgetting to add the required .msi to the Win installer.

ps I still had the extracted files from previous updates lying around, so no problem here... I'm a good boy, I am! :P

Hello all,

We have updated the installer. Instead of one patcher containing both 32- and 64-bit versions, these are now two independent update installers per platform.

Please re-download this installer and remove the previous one. We would like to thank you for your patience and apologise for any inconvenience this might have caused you.

The installers can be found on the link bellow:

Huzzah!
Well done Steinberg! :tu:

Post

so, so. its "well done" when the customer is accused 5 times that he is doing something wrong before correcting what was wrong ?

Post

At least they did correct it. They obviously assumed that people would leave extracted files in place. Rule #1: never assume! Hopefully, Steinberg will do better next update. :tu:

Post

I agree. It's not well done. Steiny is doing better than in the past with being responsive on major issues but a lot of the major issues should not have been issues in the first place and their support needs to stop blaming customers and take the issues more seriously from the get go. It's pretty obvious that if you have multiple people saying there is an issue with something right after you release it there really is an issue.

If they want to build freeware these kind of problems are ok but not on a commercial product that costs several hundred dollars.

Post

Well it is not that they forgot the file.

If you notice the previous update did not include that file either...but it worked. The Microsoft installer system changes with each incarnation of Windows. I get where problems can arise with this.

What I fail to get is that there are not dozens of people testing this before it is officially released. Now to play the advocate...if there ARE dozens of testors...then it really is time to get new testors.

I volunteer. I was on the Groove Agent beta team and feel qualified to test the products and installers of Steinberg. I own most of your products (I do not own Nuendo, ha). I can make sure this does not slip through again.

Seriously. Especially when your fixes need fixes - which in turn, need fixes.

Nice theory but incorrect. I had the issues. I have been running Windows 7 64bit for several years. Nothing has changed with Windows on my machine. I don't run Windows updates only emisoft anti malware. It isn't a huge deal but the issue was with the installer , not Windows and not with the users. I remain supportive of for Steinberg... the software is incredible. - Scotty

I did not say Windows had changed. I said Microsoft Installers had changed as Windows changed. This means that a certified Microsoft installer (.msi) might be called for when using compiled .exe files (which also explains why OSX users had no issues). Depending on how it was compiled it could be looking for files to assist with the install (ie. give permissions etc.). This has nothing to do with users but DOES have something to do with Microsoft.

I am not saying this is what happened, I merely commented on how I could see it happening given this was an issue with the Windows based install (if it were an update error specifically it would have not worked on any OS).

And either way I was right...that .msi file was not in any of the previous updates. It only has appeared in major upgrades.

What is the deal with this update? I usually update my laptop install - with no dongle present. This updater and the .10 before it both failed to complete with an obscure error message. On my other machine (with the dongle attached) the 8.5.10 update ran to completion. Both are Win 7 64.
