Did not shed any light on the crosstalk feature beyond, to my ears, sounding bad. I think that it's pretty pointless to try to evaluate crosstalk on a live recording like that.
At any rate, Slate VCC emulates stereo crosstalk on the bus which is frequency dependent and this I think will make a difference in terms of emulating a particular vibe. Whether or not it's actually better as opposed to just creating something that people are used to listening to is a different matter. I'm still not convinced that it's a good idea to emulate inter-channel crosstalk and noise/hum.
See the box on technical analysis in this article.

What you seem to be missing is that (apparently) most people don't care. It is what it is.bungle wrote:It doesn't matter if the idea is flawed, what most people seem to be dancing around and ignoring, these so called 'Mix engine' plugins could have esaily conformed to the VST standard with extensions and not some proprietary format that then only has 1 or 2 developers ever getting on board.
We can "coulda', shoulda'" all day long and it will still be exactly what it is so I don't personally see the value of and/or or anything productive coming from going on and on about it.
It's done. That's what it is.
Some say Reason should allow VST plugins. It too just "is what it is".

That looks like it could be really useful!
I have a question, though...in your example, if Hours are 12.5 and Rate is 10, why is Total 120.5? Shouldn't it be 125.0?

Wasted development time that is entirely pushed towards creating an insular eco system (Something that has not worked out well for anybody else who has tried it, only open formats have worked)

So I addressed this above. As I said, I might have misinterpreted what bungle was saying. So let's outline it clearly so we can discuss this at a higher level.RockinMillie wrote:@bungle: please enlighten usnIGhT-SoN wrote:Please explain to me how would you implement crosstalk as a VST plugin? 1) You cannot do this as a traditional 2 in 2 out bus effect without streaming audio from other sources, e.g., a channel instance. So, think of this solution like slate VCC where the channel instances not only have to send updates about their control state, but also have to stream their audio data to the parent bus instance.
2) This doesn't mean that a stereo effect is the only way to implement a plugin. You could essentially provide the framework to host N in 2 out plugins that process the N channel inputs to the bus. Since N is not constant, you will have to dynamically adjust what you're processing. It would be reasonable to limit the number of tracks that go to a bus to something like 32 or 64, but, in any case, you still want to dynamically adjust your processing so that you aren't spinning your wheels adding up lots of zeros.
I gave a simple example of Reaper allowing input plugins, now, these aren't a different standard, but it is an example of using plugins in more than one place in the audio framework.
Again, though, I don't fault them for making the choice that they did. From a development point of view, it's probably easier. You already have to be making those kinds of dynamic processing decisions in the mix engine so you have tested code that's ready to go. From a business point of view, they simply weighed the differentiating factor of a unique feature vs the alternatives and decided that this was the way to go.

The advantage of the "Slate" system as it stands is being able to drive more into the "console" on a per channel basis, the only way to do this now is by increasing the audio clip gain. I am making this assumption on the vids I have seen, if not please correct me..
The Presonus way is certainly more convenient as it simplifies the the setup, I still do not understand the crosstalk feature and why you would include in a SSL 4000 model when it wasn't there in the original. If Slate "Console edition"address the per channel drive issue it would really make an interesting addition with a lot more models, best of both worlds.

Yeah, still working out some beta bugs. The attachment has changed though, a new version is linked.Blue Phase Music wrote:That looks like it could be really useful!

I'll revisit the math, thanks.

The advantage of the presonus system over the skate system is that the presonus system was free for me
X32 and 24C mixers, S88MK3, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6, Pro3, S4, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone, OP1-F, OPXY, TR-1000, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!

Cool, so you're excited about it, have you used crosstalk and noise in your mix?SLiC wrote:The advantage of the presonus system over the skate system is that the presonus system was free for me

No, didn't say I was excited, said It was free- Some people buy the slate stuff, so I guess some people like console emulation (I have a hardware desk).ghettosynth wrote:Cool, so you're excited about it, have you used crosstalk and noise in your mix?SLiC wrote:The advantage of the presonus system over the skate system is that the presonus system was free for me

Could you please clarify what you mean by input plug-ins ?I gave a simple example of Reaper allowing input plugins, now, these aren't a different standard, but it is an example of using plugins in more than one place in the audio framework.
Thanks.

Yes, it's really quite straightforward. Reaper allows you to have a different plugin chain pre and post track. So you might use the pre-fx to apply distortion to a guitar before recording. The pre-fx are only available during recording and are applied prior to reaper capturing the track.RockinMillie wrote:Could you please clarify what you mean by input plug-ins ?I gave a simple example of Reaper allowing input plugins, now, these aren't a different standard, but it is an example of using plugins in more than one place in the audio framework.
Thanks.
So, the same idea could be applied on a bus track or a group track where, either the group track only accepted special plugins that conform to the standard, or, the group/bus was automatically limited to the configuration of the plugin. So, if you put an 8 in 2 out effect on the group/bus, then it only allows eight inputs to the group/bus...or something like that.

I miss my hardware, although, I never had a "real" desk, just a crappy pro-sumer 8 bus. But, it had plenty of noise and crosstalkSLiC wrote:No, didn't say I was excited, said It was free- Some people buy the slate stuff, so I guess some people like console emulation (I have a hardware desk).ghettosynth wrote:Cool, so you're excited about it, have you used crosstalk and noise in your mix?SLiC wrote:The advantage of the presonus system over the skate system is that the presonus system was free for me
