Why do I hear more than one audio clip at the same time?

Bear with me as I'm COMPLETELY starting from scratch experience-wise and I realize I have a steep learning curve to climb up here even for the basics!

I've recorded more than one audio clip and I want to hear only one at a time-yet I only hear multiple clips over-lapped on each other.

Aside from deleting clips, how do I select just one audio clip at a time?

What is your intention

- to keep only the most recent one;
- to keep them all but only hear the latest one?
- to keep for later, but to eventually have all playing together (use separate tracks for this...)

You wouldn't be able to crossfade audio clips if they didn't play at the same time.

You can mute individual clips.

You might also want to look into comping. Video here: Note that in newer versions you can create a comp from already-existing audio clips.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

If the clips are on separate tracks then select solo (S) or mute (M) on far right of each track
