traction7 & external midi sound sources

how can i add and use my cakewalk .ins patch file with traction 7

routing IN midi device --> OUT midi device
with the above routing (enable input monitoring on) and no clip yet inserted: selecting set program and a patch does not change the default piano sound???

once a clip is inserted i am able to insert program changes for the entire clip and at the cursor position using the clips property page

any other tips on using external midi sound sources with traction 7 welcome
