I believe the keyboard indicator (Q2) opens the text entry dialog... which ironically looks identical to the actual plugin. You're right in that it seems buggy.
It would be nice to be able to hide the keyboard as I am never going to use it and it takes up a lot of space.

Q1: Not possible.
Q2: Necessary - some hosts don't allow direct keyboard input, so you need a popup.
Q3: True, I'll check, but it's low priority really.
Q4: Autocase if you use the virtual keyboard.
