Is there any way of boosting the volume of a .vsti other than stacking multiple volume controls, and setting each to +6? I find some .SF2 soundfonts are fairly quiet, and even +6 on the level control still only shows as about -12 in the output.

No volume plugins are currently the only way. But most synth plugins should have an output gain. What are you using to play the sound font files?

It's the SFZ player; but it's more the contained samples in some of the .SF2 soundfont files. SOME of the samples (i.e. Cello) are much softer than the others. It's small, simple; but admittedly doesn't have much in the way of control (i.e. volume, response to pressure, control of LFO).

Is it possible to edit the .sfz/2 file to increase the level in a sound editor such as Audacity or Wavelab? It'd be at the expense of quality, but it might not be make much difference in a mix.

There's a registry-entry for sfz (not sfz+) which turns the volume up.

Copy the lines above (between ===) into a new text-document, rename it into the extension "reg" and execute it.

Otherwise you may change your registry manually.

If you want to edit the soundfont-file use Viena (http://www.synthfont.com/VienaSetup.exe)

just drag another volume meter after the plugin, heck you can drag 10 in a row and just turn them up above zero and you will get added gain

Place a compressor after the vsti and use the make up gain knob/slider to boost the signal.

Add a compressor after the vsti. Now, I don't know if it still comes with the tracktion package - I think I may be using a "leftover" from the T3 install - pretty basic looking, no fancy graphics... but it gives you up to about 18 db of gain; and set to simple 1:1, is virtually transparent as a compressor (unless you actually want one, in which case set the curve).

It looks like I have a number of compressor presets that presumably came with T3 or T5; set up for drums, voice, etc. It looks like one simple compressor (no fancy live level graphics or anything, just the simple graphic with threshold and compression ratio.

If you own T3 there are the MDA-plugins included. Use its loudness.dll. Better than to misuse a compressor just for boost volume.

The loudness there doesn't have much in the way of controls, and seems to have negative settings only (-inf to +0), so wouldn't work as a boost?

Now that I look for the "old stuff" from T3, I see a nice fancy Mackie mono and stereo compressors there that really do display levels and HOW the compressor is attenuating the peaks if you set it up that way. It allows a +16 signal boost. With wrong settings, though, I do notice some crackling coming through on that one. Maybe it's a little like FinalMix and doesn't behave well with the newer versions of Tracktion...? I didn't notice that with the basic crude compressor.

The mda-plugin boosts the loudness and also the output up to 60dB.
