Hi, I have been contemplating a home studio for a long time now, and have been intrigued by the simplicity of tracktion, In the past my home recording has all been "live" out from the PA mixer, the results are okay, check out shaker green on dmusic.com, anyway, I have ordered a RME fireface 800, and have a Compaq X1010CA notebook, which is Pentium M 1.4Ghz w/512 ram, 60 gig harddrive,,
I have downloaded the demo version of tracktion, but have noticed some stutter just with the Demo tunes,
is this my laptops built in sound processors limits, and will useing the firface 800 eliminate this? BTW the company I'm getting the Fireface from is also supplying with it Samplitude 6 pro, (package deal) Its Way more than what I want, at least for now, I prefer tracktions simplicity.

when i first downloaded the tracktion demo, i also noticed that the demo tunes stuttered... never fear, it won't stop you making tunes. These demos just use ALOT of reverb and delays on most channels which are notorious for eating up CPU on even fast computer.
normally you wouldn't use reverb like this - you would you reverb "sends" so less instances of the reverb were used. Also, the tracktion inbuilt reverb isn't too CPU friendly. I use WaveArts MasterVerb which is really CPU friendly.
in tracktion you can also "freeze" tracks to save CPU, or render to disk and insert WAVs to free up more CPU
so... your current computer and setup is more than capable of making tracks in tracktion, it's just the demos have heaps and heaps of Tracktion reverb used in them

also a few of the plugs used in the demo tunes cause denormalisation problems on some P4 CPUs.

aha! that would be my problem too (i'm running P4). so my comments about Tracktion plugs being CPU heavy could be unwarranted (except for P4 users)valley wrote:also a few of the plugs used in the demo tunes cause denormalisation problems on some P4 CPUs.

whilst helpful, the add noise function can only do so much; delays are likely to to still denormalize regardless of that setting.

If you're using your new laptop "fresh out of the box" it will have a loft of Microsoft crap services running which eat up your CPU. Like nearly everything else musical, you will need to tune your XP installation to get the best results.
