'Electronic music is music that employs electronic musical instruments and electronic music technology in its production'

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_music

- it doesn't have to be 100% to qualify as electronic. The development of electronic music was a gradual process, JMC was part of it but at the time I don't recall people suddenly deciding to make synth based music because of Oxygene, they were already starting to do it based on many influences (eg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultravox!_(album)).

That's how it's always been defined. No one ever said it had to be 100% synths or nothing, and electronic includes the use of samples, tape loops, field recordings too. That doesn't make Metallica electronic, that's just a stupid example, it's not a major part of their music, but it does make musicians like Keith Emerson and Jan Hammer that were using a lot of electronics in their music pioneers of electronic music, even if they were not exclusively using it or defined themselves as producing electronic music - electronic music evolved within many genres.

You can define as much as you want

Did Jean Michelle ever have to succumb to plastering on a tacky guitar solos on his work to make it sell (like ELP) on his classic trilogy of Oxygene - Equinoxe - LCM

No, he did it proper, no comprosises 100% synthetic

Post

I really, really like 3 or 4 JMJ tracks, and yes, Equinox IV is one of them. The rest are just too cheesy for my taste (They are even often played on german "Schlager" radio stations, if that's any indication of their cheesiness).

I wouldn't call him a pionneer, though. He did what he did really well, at least for some time, but I don't think he really influenced electronic music all that much, even if he, along with Vangelis (Whom I like a lot) is referenced in basically every single synth discussion.

I'm with aMUSEd on this one. JMJ basically took what others already did, added the right amount of cheese to it to sell it to the masses, and made a few good tracks in the process.

To claim he invented electronic music is just silly.

Are you talking about "EDM" or electronic music in general? There have been quite a few artist that have purely used synths sometime before Jarre. Raymond Scott is the first to come to my mind. This particular track was recorded in 1959.

Post

Yeah, there were a lot of others before JMJ.

Even Pierre Schaeffer and the likes, even if his stuff was "sample based", it's still undoubtly electronic music (Wasn't JMJ even a student of Schaeffer or something?).

Post

I'd be surprised if Jarre was a student of Scaheffer, but i guess it's possible. Pierre Henry was under Schaeffers wing for a little time. A few others too.

As EDM is an acronym for Electronic Dance Music or something like that, why would you think it it is a term for electronic music in general :?

Post

Because EDM can be a broad term, and some of the initial discussions were bringing up artists like Pink Floyd, and Metallica. So, my pale nose got caught up in the crosshairs.

The Baba o'riley vcs3 intro it's better than all Jarre songs imho :D
12 years old PC running :Reaper;Reason;Dune;Zampler;Kontakr;Reaktor;and many others countless vst :D

It's funny if you think which single really propelled EDM.
