Trouble using Boss GT-001 as a DAW controller

Hi everyone!

I've recently bought a Boss GT-001, and the unit has a Mackie-compliant DAW controller function I'd like to use with MuLab.

The monophonic guitar-to-MIDI output works fine and I'm able to play synths I load on MuLab through the USB connection. However, I cannot control the DAW when I put the unit in that mode: I've tried setting the 'GT-001 DAW CTRL' MIDI controller to every channel from 1 to 16, but no luck. Is there any step I'm missing here?

Anyway, thanks for reading this - any suggestion will be welcome.

Go into the Session Mux. Add an Event Monitor unit and make sure your note events are displaying there. Then try using the controller mode and see what events appear. It may be that they're custom SysEx sequences rather than straight forward Continuous Controller events.

@pljones:
Thanks for the helpful reply! :tu:

I managed to catch the following events:

-Button A / Click-
Note, Chan 1, F6, 127.0 (on press)
Note, Chan 1, F6, 0.0 (on release)

-Button B / Stop-
Note, Chan 1, A6, 127.0 (on press)
Note, Chan 1, A6, 0.0 (on release)

-Button C / Play-
Note, Chan 1, A#6, 127.0 (on press)
Note, Chan 1, A#6, 0.0 (on release)

-Button D / Record-
Note, Chan 1, B6, 127.0 (on press)
Note, Chan 1, B6, 0.0 (on release)

-Value Knob Left / Position-
Controller, Chan 1, 60 - Controller 60, 65.0

-Value Know Right / Position-
Controller, Chan 1, 60 - Controller 60, 1.0

Unfortunately, the current GT-001 firmware does not seem to send signals for the other knobs, which is a shame. Either way, with the buttons above, at least basic DAW control should be possible.

But how do I proceed from here to map those events to the appropriate DAW functions?

Once more, many thanks for the help!

Sorry, can't help on that - I use my PC keyboard and mouse for controlling the app itself, I've never looked into doing it over MIDI. I don't actually know if it's possible, to be honest -- but with the above info, someone else may be able to help.

@pljones - No problem at all, friend. Thanks again for taking the time to look into this, and have a nice weekend!

As I wait to see if some new information comes up in this thread, I'll keep on trying to setup the controller. Of course, if I find a solution, I'll post it here for others.

Hi Protomni

From the manual: "And besides using computer keys to trigger context functions, you can also use incoming MIDI events to trigger context functions. This allows you, for example, to start/stop the sequencer using a MIDI controller event! How to set this up? The same way as when setting up a key shortcut, but instead of pressing a key, you send a MIDI event so the app 'learns' what you want."

Hi, sbj!

Thank you for the help and for pointing to the guide - that worked like a charm!

Just for reference, if anyone finds themselves in the same situation, you gotta specify the max and min values for the value knob to do different things when turned to each side. Other than that, it's really straightforward.

Thank you both for wasting a bit of your Saturday to help me with this! Greatly appreciated! :)
