So you guys that are making patches for Icarus; are these to be included with the synth on release or are they for personal sales? Just wondering how many sounds they are planning on shipping with and when we might be able to hear some of this. I'm new to the party and there's a lot of pages here so I skipped up to page 52.

Based on the Tone 2 synths that I have purchased, I have no doubt that there will be a crap ton of patches included with Icarus. So don't worry. You'll have more than enough stuff to get you started.

Plenty of patches, I'm not sure about the actual number, but you'll find enough sounds to keep you going for quite a while. Some of us will also release personal soundbanks through Tone2 later on.

I've read it'll have "959 presets" when it launches.

As a beta-tester and demo-maker for the synth, I can say that there are a LOT in the thing! I didn't count them all, but it wouldn't surprise me if there's almost 1,000. And Mac's are some of the best, from what I've heard.

I kind of get the impression that Nemesis is not very popular, since I don't see much discussed about it here at KVR, or other forums, but I was always tempted to get it, and think it is a very sophisticated FM synth.

Any feedback, on this ?

well i have no real knowledge of fm programming to be honest, and nemesis is physical modelling combined with fm afaik.

i just think it sounds outstanding!

i recommend it without reservation, honestly.

Nemesis and Elektra are pretty much my two "go-to" synths. Something about the sounds just seems to work in most of my stuff, and I find inspiration in the presets in a way that lets me just run with an idea.

I don't know how great Nemesis is as an "FM synth", since it was designed to do a lot more: it can do 22 types of synthesis, according to Tone 2. But it does FM very well, and there was even an FM-specific soundset released for it, which focused more on that type of synthesis.

I always dubious about stuff that gets released with that many sounds, especially when the ppl who make the sounds say they have 'barely scratched the surface' of what it can do.

Why no get some pro's in to actually show off all the synths features? I'd much rather have 100 quality presets that do that, than 1000 sounds that i can find in any other synth.

I'm not sure what your point is. They do have pros who show off the synth's features. The demo tracks highlight certain presets--and those presets highlight some of the synth's features. Their website also has standalone sounds that showcase each synth's features.

They also have pros designing the presets, and they get them to create presets that show off the synth's capabilities. I don't know why they have so many presets, but each synth has come with several hundred, and no one seems too bothered by that. It just shows how capable the synths are.

Arturia's synths also come with hundreds of presets, as do NI's. Tone 2 isn't the only one doing this.

And some people buy the synth in part for the presets. They'd rather not make their own, and they see having 1000 presets as adding value to the synth. With 14-18 banks per synth, having 80 or so presets per category is better than only have 8 per category, and you get a wider range of ideas of what the synth can do, even if you want to make your own.

True, there are some "variations on a theme". I really don't need another "Moog bass" or "DX-7 E-piano", for example. But there are some interesting ones for each synth, too.

And you don't have to agree with Tone 2's philosophy on presets; Arturia, NI, IKMM, Korg, Dune 2, Synthmaster and many others already do.

I have Nemesis and I think now this is another example of their website blurb tending to exaggerate, many of these synthesis types are just variations on the same type eg NeoFM softsync and hardsync or phase distortion with a saw or square wave and also some combo modes are all counted as separate synthesis types. This is why I would prefer more details and less exaggeration as it's hard to actually know this from the website, you can of course demo it, which I did and I bought it as I still like the sound.

btw the NeoFM bank you refer to is another example, quite a few patches don't actually use the NeoFM mode, that was disappointing as it's not a cheap bank.

FWIW currently more than 300 Icarus presets are made by Markus from Tone2 himself and as the developer he knows for sure how to use the synth properly.

With quite a lot of presets (around 1000) and many different sound designers chances are higher that most of the synths features were used with those. The current selection of around 1000 presets were selected from a much bigger amount that was submitted.

Anyway Icarus seems to be as versatile that there will be lots of new stuff to explore for sound designers in the future. As i already mentioned i want to do a 200 presets soundset too (besides my factory presets).

Your first point about the "marketing" is valid, and you'll note I didn't say these were 22 different types of synthesis.

And no, I haven't heard anything from the "NeoFM" soundset. If several of the patches in it don't actually use the NeoFM mode of synthesis, that's a shame.

But like you said, you can test the demo, see for yourself if Icarus (or any Tone 2 synth) is to your liking, and go from there. How a synth makes its sounds isn't as important as whether or not it makes sounds you like.
