Midiworks, you're great man. Harmonizer is really cool stuff. Wish you very best with this project of yours. It could be THE virtual guitar amp. I spent last couple of weeks playing with the NI Guitar Rig demo, and while it has some very cool features (namely modular design so that it can be upgraded with new amp models) it still lacks the real guitar amp sound. In low gain mode it sounds very good, but high gain is not impressive. From what I heard from your soundclick site your amp sounds very very good. I also agree with Dimitar that for demostration purposes you should focus on pure amp sound without reverbs, delays and stuff so that we have common denominator for comparing different types of virtual amps.

I did not forget my dry mp3s as promised. I will upload them as soon as possible.

Wish you very best.
Cheers,

Luka

Thanks guys ! :)

Yes luka2807, you are right.

This IS my big problem, why include things like reverb, delay, chorus ect. ?
Everybody has those fx these days, some are very high quality, I can not beat...

So I am thinking of some different ways to go.

Any suggestions ?
What has to be there and what not ?

Reverb and Delay is "Must" - just for show :D

Harmonizer is " fancy" - or "Boom" :P

Ok, you asked:
- A wahwah with both manual (=controller) and auto wah settings.
- Some "pre" effects. I use to use quite a lot of effects before the actual amplification stage. Think Rotovibe, Octavia and the likes...
- A compressor. Sometimes it's part of a sound, so using your hosts one wouldn't be the same as you can't save that as a preset (btw, the same is true for the other pre-effects).
- An additional distortion/overdrive/fuzz unit, again as a pre-effect. Allways annoying that most amp simulators only give you either an amp setting or a fuzz setting. We want BOTH!

So much for now.

This was planed !
But Auto-wah... ? I never liked those...

Alright, I still have to think about the routings...
Before the amp ?

Already there ! ;)
Next is a noise gate.

Before the amp, like in real life ?
Guitar -> Fuzz -> Amp ?
OK, no problem ! :D

Me neither, at least not for guitar. But others may just like it.

I would say yes. Rotovibes/Octavias, phasers and what not in front of the amplification stage are up to give you some serious warbling sounds (but a switchable routing would be even better).
Next is a noise gate.
Good, a useful thing!
Before the amp, like in real life ?
Guitar -> Fuzz -> Amp ?
Sure! But make it a flexible distortion unit!
Models I like (that no amp setting can reproduce):
- Ibanez Tube Screamer
- ProCo Rat
- Boss DS-1 and OD-1
- Electro Harmonix Fuzz
- Marshall Jackhammer (well, this is not needed much)
OK, no problem ! :D
Great :)

Ok, tried things, before the amp sounds horrible...
I mean, it sounds just like I remember it, bad ! :-o
Only tried with a screamer distortion...
Other fx might work.
We will see... ;)

I think the pre-amp effects are a great idea. The project i had initialy been talking ot you about was developed around having a basic amp sim and a bunch of pre effects "stomp" like in quality.

With a plug in like the jcm 900 i found that it actually worked better if it was approached like a real amp as opposed to a plug in, by using the ds-1 plug in before it and playing with both of their drive settings i could come up with a better range of sounds than to use just one or the other. Of course this was completely contrary to using something like amplitube where its onboard "pre effects" just made it sound even worse... :(

Of course in my field of music "natural" is not always a sound that is embraced, but there is a line there somewhere...

I would suggest a couple drive modellers, maybe a quick chorus or phaser, modulators of various sorts, before the amp, and maybe some post amp effects like EQ, a good spring reverb sound, like from a real amp, and maybe some form of stereo delay.... stuff that can be absolutely bypassed to conserve cpu...

or creating a routing system where various effects could be routed before or after the amp modeller, and only allowing a couple effects to be used at a given time, then restricting where they can be routed to.

ps. i sat down to record you a Meshuggah style demo track with doubled rythms and a single lead this weekend, but i accidentally pulled it all through my pre amp before my st-audio adc/dac, so it has quite a bit of preamp coloration which i know you are trying to avoid... ill try to pull it together yet this week though. :)

let us know how your amp sim is coming along.

also, if you need any gui help, i finally got most of my gui pieces done (to match the knobs i showed you), so would be glad to be of any service to you that you could require. (...if you cant beat em, join em! :) )

best wishes
Kelly
