Time for a tablet receptor?

I'd love to see a tablet based muse receptor.
Now's the time.
Save me from IOS
Somebody get a kickstarter going :D

The Surface looks like a good host for something like this - some box using USB3 with the "brain" in a mac mini form factor?
Thing is - I love the way my Receptor is rack mounted and I just have a rack of gear, midi controller and another synth to pack to and from gigs along with laptop for just live DAW duties. Another device that has it's own case, cables etc..
Time to start mocking up something in photoshop to start spruiking ;)

mac mini like would be great also.
I was thinking tablet to make it more like a "closed" system to protect maybe add some protection of the OS from just being copied. I don't know if the receptor has some copy protection scheme.
But heck yeah - some more available HW would be great, and I wouldn't mind paying licensing for the OS

Not sure I understand the point?

The value proposition of the Receptor is that it's one unit to lug and focuses on doing one thing. At present I'd say the WINE-on-Linux architecture is proving more a hindrance than a help.

Moreover there are solid and FAR more capable Windows-based VST hosts (Cantabile, Forte), so I'm not sure why you'd want to stake a new claim there if you couldn't sell it to a larger market.

And the tablet itself--at minimum you'd want a loaded Surface, and it may squeal under load compared to what a Receptor can do (given the nerfed processors they tend to use). And youv'e got a fragile screen to care for!

I'm just here to break hearts and crush dreams! :P

If someone wants to community-source a save-the-ship effort, I'd favor getting Windows to run efficiently on the Receptor with some level of front-panel interaction + support for the Receptor 2's audio card. The aMusing Replacer was perhaps a start, but Bidule, as powerful as it is, is not something I want to deal with day-to-day.

Damn. Then I take it you won't be on the list of people interested in my Receptory-Pi mega portable unit that fits in your hand but can only run a vst that creates sine waves eh?

Just kidding. Although..

There's merit in a touch interface for whatever comes next for the receptor concept, be that keeping the hardware going once the OS goes by the wayside, or certainly taking the aMusing Receptor to a suitable level where it's a viable proposition.

Then there's also the requirement of a replacement for the Receptor should the unit be totally destroyed. Hypothetical - if your Receptor was stolen overnight, what would/could take its place?? I think that's what raintalk was also throwing into the mix, and a legit question for us Receptor owners..

ok - firstly forgiveness for not busting open CAD first thing on a Saturday morning for a full schematic, but if I were to design my ideal replacement for my Receptors, this would be my Beta design.

  • bring back alpha wheel - somewhat like the Integra-7
big bright easy to read screen - something like the classic Kurzweil K2500R, maybe a tad bigger
input and phones sockets ala current Receptors
one or maybe two dual USB3 sockets on front panel (more on rear)
power and volume controls to the right.
provision for some kind of shelf or holding device for a tablet, removeable for obvious reasons
start with 1tb SSD built in, space for additional 2.5" internal drive
Intel CPU and board, as bog standard and solid as possible
Built in Wifi for connecting up tablet to and use RDP or VNC with your device of choice (ipad/android/surface etc)
midi in/out/thru on rear of course
    gigabit network
    vga/dvi/hdmi video out
2 analog input channels, 8 analog output channels
    coaxial S/PDIF digital input/ouput
    Windows 10 LTS
    rack mountable chassis
optionally bootable from external HDD as a backup
ultra quiet power supply (dual redundant for Pro version?)
