Setting up a Midi-keyboard

Hi

I'm using my Yamaha MX61 workstation as a midi keyboard.

I open the MIDI setup options/menu. But all I can choose is "none" under the Input ports, and "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth" (or none) under Output ports.

Aren't I supposed to find my soundcard in the dropdown menu?
And if so, what could I be doing wrong? I have the midi cable in the "out" of the keyboard, and in the "in" of the soundcard.

Thank you

How did you connect the Yamaha to your computer?

Post

With a Tascam sound card. Keyboard -> Midi -> sound card -> usb -> computer

Did you install the Tascam drivers? As long as you don't see any MIDI input device in MuLab, you have to check your system setup, check if all necessary drivers are installed. Eventually search the web for Tascam + MIDI + driver, or something like that.

I have the driver working. I've used the sound card in Audacity, for instance.
And I have made it work in MuLab for sound, by jack.
But I was not able to use it while making sounds in MuLab, like the drums. I had to switch between whether I'm hearing what comes from the sound card and what comes from the computer (like MuLabs own sounds). And if I switch to one, I can't hear what I recorded with the other.
And besides, I want it to be a Midi controller anyway, not just direct Audio.

Wow, complicated issues.

I propose to start from the start: MuLab audio output.

1) MuLab -> Audio Setup -> Select ASIO + Tascam driver
2) MuLab -> MIDI Setup, disable everything, especially also that GS Wavetable synth.
3) MuLab -> Project -> Open Demo -> open one of the demo projects
4) Click Play.

Do you hear sound as expected?

Audacity isn't a MIDI tool. Can you install MIDI OX and see events being received in that?

NB: And when that is working fine we can continue on MIDI input.

I followed your guide and the sound works perfectly. So that's good.

What now?

Great!

Next is MIDI input, but keep that audio setup, don't change it.

MuLab -> MIDI Setup -> Input port 1 = Select your Tascam MIDI port. It should be there.

Done. Now you should be able to play the focused module in MuLab.

It still says "none". Maybe my insertion of the MIDI cable is somehow wrong?

It means that your system does not know any MIDI device. Best to check the Tascam manual / website / support for how to set it up so MIDI input can be used. I can't help with that, sorry.

It might have something to do with the fact that I updated to Windows 10 and I believe that my sound card is too old - made for 32bit times.
Oh well. Thanks anyways!

Be sure to check the Tascam website about it. Maybe there are updated drivers?
