May I use Maximus on master channel in my track like this guy? It's included in FL Studio Producer. If not, I'll download and try Limiter No.6.

OK, thank you. I just wanted to be sure, because payware plugins are not alowed. I wanted to buy it more than year ago, but IL expanded their editions and I got Maximus and Sytrus for free (just FL version, but who cares :) ).

I agree, I have also fallen into the pattern of not finishing tracks lately and it has been good to not be able to say "I'll finish that later after I get the EP out etc" It's also cool to be just using freeware, some of the free plugins available are great but you can forget they are there sometimes when you have other stuff.

Yeah, I feel I had to explore (a small part of) Logic quite in-depth and it's kind of amazing what can be done.

I wasn't going to enter this month and instead focus on learning more about some of the percussion synths and commercial plugins I need to learn, but considering that KVR's TPTB "appropriated" last month's song name into the graphic for this month; it poked me into doing it. :)

I'm also starting my new job next week, so even though there's more time left in the month, alas, I'm not going to have the free-time my 3 month "sabbatical" as afforded me... So without further ado...

OK, so for this month's work I built up the new version of the percussion synth performance rig.. I give you OrganGrindrr MkII. :) Headphones (and maybe an herbal supplement) will make it more fun. :)

Thoughts/Notes:

* As last time, this entry is 100% real-time improv. performance. There are no "sequences" beyond the interplay of modulated repeats and/or arps (both Pod's internal arp, as well as "external" arps). There's no post editing. This is just a stereo bounce of my performance.

* It's a little more uptempo than last month. :)

* You'll be pleased to notice that you will need significantly less time to endure my entry. However, I'm also posting up an "extended version" (which is really just another, longer performance) that I like a lot better... It's got more room to breath, there's more exploration, etc..

* But... as an even bigger bonus, I'm also putting up a video () of me jamming to the OSC87 "patch" I created so you can see that it's really me playing live with drums. No, it's not a hallucination :). While I didn't actually video the submitted performance, you'll notice that the start of the video follows a similar structure to the shorter submission before it takes off on a journey from the drony'est lows to the acidy'est highs (and then back, and then back, and then...). I really wanted to take the time to let some of the more interesting/spacey synth sounds I made have a chance to "play" with each other, find some interesting grooves hidden down there deep in spacetime... And I figured you guys didn't want a 40 minute submission. You're welcome. :) (I did jam for almost 2 hours with this patch as well, but didn't record it.. :) I can't wait to start doing this with real drum synths, more options as far as effects and synths!

* The idea for my entire approach to this thing is very similar to jazz improv... You map out or create motifs that are a combination of rhythmic parameters as well as the sound/timbre/instrument, you have some basic structures in mind, then I act as band leader (Synth Buddy Rich? :) ) and essentially "conduct" the various elements as well as perform my own parts where it makes sense. This can lead to essentially hours of improv. from very basic components given enough variation in the parts, or since I'm dealing with synths as opposed to samples (Ugh! Icky!) using a lot of modulation to continually create change/interest.

* <RAMBLINGS> So I'm really taking a lot of ideas behind stuff Brian Eno pioneered (studio as instrument, generative music (although what I'm doing now is not generative... It's more directed modulation or alteration), putting toward synth-based techno in the vein of (BasicChannel, PlastikMan, etc.), and trying to solve the "problem" of how to have live, 100% improvised performances of this kind of music that are more than just a dude twiddling knobs, patching cables, etc. So much electronic music is "plagued" by the inability to have interesting performances that don't rely on pre-recorded clips/sequences, etc. Even DeadMau5 has pointed out that most big EDM/IDM types are just hitting play and then bopping around a bit. I still think a lot of this has to do with the human interface element... Even though technically all my drum pads are doing is transmitting MIDI information like any old pad controller like a Push or MPC, I honestly believe that there's an element of the physicality of hitting shit with sticks that makes the process "different." That said with only one synth to work with, no "real" percussion, etc. the amount of me "playing" in the video is pretty limited. </RAMBLINGS>

* Considering that I've only been doing this for three months and I created this "patch" and associated performances using only one synth, and at least in my mind it doesn't totally suck, I think I'm on the right track... When I have more synths to use, more shit to hit so I can control more parts and effect more modulations, etc. I think I should be able to do a lot more.

* One of the things that I'm really proud of with this piece is that during the entire thing there's no fader work. Considering that at times there's a lot of shit going on, I think you can still pick out interesting little bits going on within or between voices/sounds. I'm able to take it from very minimal levels, to wild &wacky synth-mod WTF'ness, to full on freakout mode. All without ever taking the sticks out my hands & all by just hitt'n shit. That's all down to setting the initial mix, sound design,EQ, etc. and just going with it. Granted, it's not perfect, but again, I've been doing this for three months. That's gotta be worth some bonus points right? :)

Epicverb is one of the best free reverbs I ever came across. Unfortunately I think it is only available as 32-bit version, but that does not matter to me anyway.

I never heard of it before. I just checked it out on Youtube and it sounds clean and nice. I think I will try it out. Thanks for the tip!
