Melda GUI look

I think the UI of Melda plugins is their biggest weak spot. I sometimes avoid using my Melda plugins because I'm not in the mood to deal with their complexity and awkward UIs.
However, improving Melda UIs would be complicated. Melda seems to have a single framework shared by all plugins and part of that framework is the UI specification. So even the best UI designer in the world could only make UI changes that are supported by the framework. To make significant UI improvements, the framework itself would probably have to be extended to allow more customization. Maybe this will happen one day.

Exactly what I expressed in my initial post.Frantz wrote:I think the UI of Melda plugins is their biggest weak spot. I sometimes avoid using my Melda plugins because I'm not in the mood to deal with their complexity and awkward UIs.

I use tools that inspire me aesthetically. Never ever would I use MPowerSynth to make a song, however powerful and insanely complicated it can get. Still I think there are sound-designers who don't care about the looks, it's just not my case.

And here is another screen grab of the style where I put some pretty gross colors on the knobs and banners to show what can be done with the multi parameters.

With the huge amount of features in each plugin, i couldn't imagine a "smooth good looking" layout comprehending it all. I (for one) think that Melda has done a very good improvement, when releasing the themed layouts with version 9.
And I personally don't need a plugins looking like a modeled hardware with an image of a tube, and even less a 3D marketing image of a plugin, appearing to be some physical box.
Vojtech - I prefer featurerich quality sound over featureless good looking plugins.

it's not about a hyperealistic look. there are plenty plugins that have a drawn ui too, but look way more inviting. it's all about a look & feel that makes you wanna use these tools. and for most users, meldaproduction doesn't offer this. sure, one can get used to everything. but who wants to spend months or years with plugins you don't feel comfortable with, until you possibly like them?Nicolaibob wrote:And I personally don't need a plugins looking like a modeled hardware with an image of a tube, and even less a 3D marketing image of a plugin, appearing to be some physical box.

I think they're awkward because there's a lot of wasted space that's not proportional. It looks very assymetrical. They need to have Fabfilter help them out.

Fabfilter stuff does look great but to me Slate and that whole school of design is very crappy with all their fake battered and rusty hardware gear fetishism. Give me a modern functional and aesthetically pleasing gui that isn't ashamed of being software anyday.imagine2015 wrote:Look at FabFilter, Eiosis, Slate, etc. They produce awesome tools which simply look splendid.

I like the analog and realistic looks waaay more then the above.
Using a touchscreen on analog knobs I know where to grab - on the above example it looks like horror to
use with a touchscreen and fingers. The Bootsy plugins have some nice guis. But I too think the actual Meldas could spare some space. Mostly with the wide number displays.

I don't have a problem with the layout of GUIs. A bit of refinement here and there (such as the non-edit pages), ok, but I think the thing that puts people off is the ad's and product pages showing off the colourful potential of the products. Pink, green, bright orange, some of them look horrendous
, and I think sometimes that immediate impression is what puts people off. If everything looked Ozone/blue grey as standard, across the site, it would look a lot slicker (albeit less fun
).
The design considerations, sound and functionality are all top notch, so I don't really see how the GUI can be any better without sacrificing features. The Fabfilter approach isn't a great comparison because their plugins have far less functionality in the first place. I'd rather have the current itineration of Melda, than a set of essentially boring plugins with a pretty GUI.
