Heh.
Silly stuff before:
Been away for about a year, and Wagtunes is still here ranting about how the OSC is pointless, how ppl should learn to write music, and how his track will result under his own expectation.
Maybe 'cause usually is the one that can do stuffs which do stuffs, while the one that can't teach how stuffs should be do.
But, for the Great Forger, you're rude A.F. Wanting to be equally rude, I could say that even your piece is'nt a master in songwriting: One base note, one arp which is'nt even "a tempo" (how is this said in english?) with everything else, and some random fiddling on the keys with some preset. It reminded me when i was young, going in the instrument store and trying the synths by browsing the presets.
But perhaps your track mean something TO YOU, as mine, with the repeating center core, and obsessive arps, means something to me and as each tracks means something for the authors. Perhaps the long intros you're talking about in the head of the writer was a way to create expectation, perhaps your play is a melody, a "dialogue" so much high and difficult that my brain can't even start to see the meaning. That's why you're not givin opinion, but arrogant sentences. Wag, really, it's more annoyng than a non-working, freezing VST. Everyone here apreciate critics, as everyone here seems to be here to learn, so we all apreciate your feedback, in the form of opinions. Your rants and arrogant judgment, instead, is something i'll try to avoid.
Serious stuffs here:
I'm amazed as usual: each guy here is able to get sounds from the synths that i can't even wonder how to start to get something similar. I'd like so much to have everything made in the same DAW so I could look at each of your track and study the setting, the routing, ecc.
(this is just to say that i'd like to learn, not requesting to make the OSC this way
)
Many compliments to you all.

FTR, my track is a step above pure garbage. Why? Because I spent an hour on it. Why? Because even when I bust my ass on a track and make "music" I still end up near the bottom of the rankings. So I put as much effort into this as it deserved. Aside from that, and I own almost every U-he synth, this one really disappointed me. I didn't like working with it AT ALL. Maybe I'm just spoiled because of their really GREAT synths of which this is certainly not.Parduz wrote:Heh.

So yeah, my track sucks. But at least I have the guts to acknowledge that it sucks because I simply didn't care.
The next OSC I will actually write a song. And it will be better. And it will still end up near the bottom of the rankings.
But at least I'll enjoy working with the synth.
PS - I hope going off on me like that made you feel better. It sure made me feel absolutely nothing. Because that's what one feels when they just don't give a crap.
Carry on.

Hey guys - be nice.
The thing is we all have opinions, Wag is just very vocal about his. As long as we're not personally attacking people, I see no harm in expressing opinions, however rude/etc.. Sometimes it feels like (or you are almost certainly) the target of said criticisms, but it won't help anything adding fuel to the fire. One of the best traits a musician can have is to not get too emotionally involved with your own music, it makes taking criticism a lot easier, and being able to improve.
And... I love to pee on banjos! ... hmm, where can I find one?

About me, i was not even thinking at me. I just think that "learn to write music!" should only be said by <insert your best songwriter here> if, AND ONLY IF, before there was a mutual agremeent that you're the student and him the teacher. So i was just explaining why it was rude, in my opinion, by being equally arrogant. I was making a point, not attacking him.z.prime wrote:Hey guys - be nice.

FTR, I didn't take what you said as an attack at all. Like I said, didn't bother me in the least. I just bought the new Sugar Bytes Factory and I'm in heaven. This thing is more fun than even Cyclop.Parduz wrote:About me, i was not even thinking at me. Right, I mean if a 5-year old tells you "your music should sound like Barney the purple dinosaur", you might not heed it. But that doesn't make the 5-year olds opinion any less valid, it just may be one you ignore. Maybe you ARE writing music for kids shows. Or just trying to write something for the kids class to sing. Or maybe you're writing death metal, in which case you're still looking for banjos to pee on and don't care about writing something your 5-year old likes.Parduz wrote:I just think that "learn to write music!" should only be said by <insert your best songwriter here> if, AND ONLY IF, before there was a mutual agremeent that you're the student and him the teacher
The point is not to say Wag is a 5 year old but rather that people's opinions are all valuable, whether they're a master or not. Now, someone *posing* as a master and offering baseless advice is a different story. I would agree with a portion of Wag's points... especially in a competition like this, getting to the point of the song more quickly is important because wading through 60 songs takes time and people are more likely to skip stuff that takes a lot of time to do much. But that's not a rule you have to follow, as with all art, it may well be broken by someone's artful decisions. But if your art isn't something he likes, then you should pay no mind and do what you feel like. I'll also say, for sure, I think there's a threshold of monotony that makes me lose interest in tracks as well, not many fall into that category, but every now & then...

Maybe we should have one OSC where no one knows who wrote what song till after the voting has ended.wagtunes wrote:FTR, my track is a step above pure garbage. Why? Because I spent an hour on it. Why? This has been suggested a lot of times, I think it would be a neat idea to try... would need a new non-SoundCloud site to pull it off nicely/properly, though. I may have something we could try one day (sort of related to an idea I've had), if people wanted.Examigan wrote:Maybe we should have one OSC where no one knows who wrote what song till after the voting has ended.

Really don't like that idea to be honest. Transparency should be encouraged. Ignore the trolls, and people who are negative. I feel like that is retreating.

It's not about hiding things, but rather about eliminating any perceived weighting in the votes due to it being a popularity contest. The OSC is sorta special that I think there isn't a lot of that in play... but take other bigger remix competitions and the like, these are very frequently just preexisting popularity contests rather than finding the best submission.bjporter wrote:Really don't like that idea to be honest. It's not a popularity contest, and never was. I've never heard of anyone voting on popularity. You do well because you make great tracks. Great tracks float to the top, always. All of us who have been in the top five have made some tracks that didn't do that great.z.prime wrote:It's not about hiding things, but rather about eliminating any perceived weighting in the votes due to it being a popularity contest. If we all respect each other, and ignore the trolls we can have a lot of great honest discussions about our tracks.
