Totally agree. I have a huge workflow suckage not being able to use my FabFilter plugs. I love them. So much. Freeverb 3 is good, I highly recommend it. It does suck just a bit to use but sounds awesome.. but pick the ProG 12 sec reverb, then adjust it down, eventually you get the hang of it. I am sooo close to getting the source code for that one and just making a nice UI for it... Agree about the compressors sorta, just get ALL the TDR plugs, they are awesome, they'll help out the OSC a lot. You can substitute TDR Nova for a MB comp pretty effectively, it takes some getting used to, though. And TDR Kotenlikov is a nice compressor. Hell, even Molot can sound awesome.. but WTF am I looking at with it? hehe. Anyway, you should look at the list of plugs on my tracks, they work pretty wellwagtunes wrote:I wish I could get better free FX for those synths that have none at all, like TAL. I hate all my free reverbs. I hate my EQs because they're so hard to work with. I hate my compressors for the same reason. My delays are good. But that's it.

Thanks Z. That really is the most frustrating part of this whole process. And I've got a great reverb in EWQL Spaces. And of course I have all the Fabfilter stuff.z.prime wrote:Totally agree. Where can I find the list of your plugs? Remember, I'm on 64 bit Windows.

I was disappointed in my mix but yesterday I had the change to listen to it on big speakers at a substantially loud level. And to be honest, I was very pleased.
I might sound very smug but I think I made a good, catchy and perhaps a bit commercial song. Don't expect me to repeat this every month though.

Here. They are all cross-platform, of course I use a bunch of the stock Bitwig plugs just because I'm used to them. But between your DAW plugs, Freeverb 3, Limiter 6, and the TDR plugs, you should be able to get a decent mix. It *does* suck a but compared to use the FabFilter stuff. Ok, a lot bit... anyway, the trick is to find a few plugs that do the job and get good with them.wagtunes wrote:... I've got a great reverb in EWQL Spaces. Might be very cool to try to do a contest with pay effects allowed. Still with no modulation rules but allow for commercial stuff. Would really help get more professional level results.

I've always been an advocate of this. I mean, the argument is that the playing field isn't level when you have a lot of commercial plugins. I think the top tracks around here prove that wrong time and time again. But still, my biggest gripe is that I *did* pay for the stuff and I have become familiarized finally with some of it to the point it improves my workflow. Can you get better EQ results with FabFilter Pro-Q2 than Bitwig EQ? Yes. Absolutely. Is this the thing that will separate a great track from a crappy one? Not at all... anyway, one day we'll have a rules vote, I'm sure with the randomness people discuss and this will be shot down again. All in all, things aren't bad, but I want to use this time to help improve as much as I can, and being limited to the DAW stock plugs inhibits that for me.jasinski wrote:Might be very cool to try to do a contest with pay effects allowed. It's a fun idea. It might be a slight burden if I need to check a project like this, as the plugin missing might be integral to the sound. I do still check projects now and again. Maybe we could do this as a special type thing.

This would probably be a bad sign if that was the case, no? I mean... overall mix gets much worse, ok, you're missing an EQ used everywhere... but still, idea is that without those it should be *recognizable*bjporter wrote:... the plugin missing might be integral to the sound...

Basically it means it could be easier to fudge sounds, when they could actually be samples, etc. But if you guys are cool with that possibility, its all good.z.prime wrote:This would probably be a bad sign if that was the case, no? I'm confused about that... because the difference would be so great when checking the project?bjporter wrote:... it means it could be easier to fudge sounds, when they could actually be samples ...

Not sure what the confusion is. If we only have access to free plugins, it's a lot easier to check projects for abuse. If someone is using all using all kinds of commercial plugs, it's quite a bit harder.

Right, but one of the tenets of the contest is that the use of plugins of any type don't alter the sound beyond recognition... so missing eq should maybe muddy up the mix a lot, but not change the overall character of the track, no?bjporter wrote:Not sure what the confusion is. Ah i see whats up. Ok so let's say someone used percussion samples in a clever way, and submitted their project. People are suspect, so I check it out. Instead of handing me that project, they swap out the samples for some clever tracks with commercial plugs, and drum presets / layering, whatever. I don't have all these plugins, so couldn't verify.
If they used free plugins, it would be fairly easy to get the plugins, and verify that the sound matches up.
