I know I am supposed to just run out and plop down $300+ for BFD Superior, or NI Battery/Studio, and just learn to deal with the horribly complicated overblown interfaces, but I want good and cheap.

Here's my wish list
-drum synths need not apply (there are plenty of good free ones)
-high quality realistic sounds
-snare and cymbal detail most important
-lots of velocity layers...16+?
-all samples bone dry
-simple drag n drop UI
-low cost, $99 or less
-don't need 100 gajillion different monster kits
-2 or 3 really good kits: basic 5-piece rock, jazz w brushes, and maybe a world-perc all-in-one type kit.

Suggestions?

I checked out a lot of the free sf2 fonts on Hammersound but all of them were quite lame, even the big ones. BTW, anybody else notice that sfz output is very soft? like -20dB soft? is there some hidden setting I missed?

Either up your price or lower your expectations. :hihi: Also, post in the Instruments thread where more people visit and can give advice.

Maybe you would have good luck keeping the UI and the samples separate so you can get the VST you like best with the sample content you like best, like the forthcoming NUSofting drum VST with the original DFH samples...

try the NSkit - its pretty good sf2

I was making a similar decision, but slighlt different. I just want one very complete (prog) rock kit. Now that I can do a "slow bounce" in Sonar 3, I think I am pretty happy with Drumkit From Hell 2, which goes for $99.00.

It lacks the jazz and ethnic stuff.

the nskit guy is supposed to be working with muon (this was awhile ago though) to make a reasonably priced drum vst. I don't know the specs, but if it contained 3-4 drumkits of nskit or higher quality, Id buy it for $99...

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I've pretty much ruled out anything soundfont-based. Maybe it's sfz but I tried ruffrider and easyrider, thought both were pretty lousy. I was unable to load NSKit in 512M with only Tracktion running (got the "no [sic] enough memory" dialog !) Engrish in diarog text not so good! [All your base...].

Impressed with the dfh demo, but I guess that's samples only, what free VST sampler would be "best"? As I said in the OP, I'd rather not deal with a gen purpose sampler, but....

Check out Linplug's RMIII at $59 (or $89 with extra Manytone kits). It won't do everything you ask but as others have said you'll have to up your price to get all of that. I've been using RMIII for a while and I like it. Only downer for me is that it doesn't display the current patch name when you've loaded it but I think that's fixed in RMIV if you you can go to $149.

hmmm. two things of interest here...
1. NUSofting drum VST with DFH
2. manytone.

problems: 1) isn't available, and 2) has no demo.

What is the ETA of the NuSofting bundle? I like the DFH sound--that Sonor kit f'in rocks--but it has no jazz or world-perc kit.

Manytone looks like it might be just what the doctor ordered, but the demo mp3 is "available soon". OK I got some time to kill. Any comments on their audio quality?

First, none of the above kits are 'soundfont-based'. You can download raw wavs to load into any sampler. As for you nskit problem, 99% chance you have 32-bit playback enabled in sfz - that doubles memory usage. Nskit should only take around ~210 mb in 16-bit mode.

With ST2, beware: you can't assign different kit pieces to different outputs - unless you load the drumkit multiple times. Also the effects are global and affect the whole kit at once.

That said, I'm interested to hear how you get on with the Studio Drum capsule. Let us know how its quality is.

ditto

have no problems with sfz and NS kit in tracktion on a 512 notebook. Can also use CM's 404 with the medium kit. Only problem is that there's only one stereo out which is limiting. (others are mono)...but at least you do have multi outs which are essential for kits.

I have sonic refills reality drums and I'm pretty happy with it. It beats the crap out of nskit. It's only for reason, but I would be fairly confindent that they make as good a sound for another format like the studio drum capsule.

I use Groove Agent a lot and it works well with Tracktion, though it is not for free or not even cheap but:
- It is easy to use
- Lots of styles
- Gets you productive fast
- Different kits included
- Sounds good or OK but not fantastic
- Can easily be routed to run another sampler with different sounds
- Four stereo outputs
