I need some compressor help.

My Fabfilter C has a setting called wide stereo mastering that I use on my output channel that has a great effect of widening the stereo field. I'm trying to dissect the preset to see what makes it tick to apply it to one of my free compressors in order to duplicate this effect.

I am able to duplicate everything with my stock Cubase compressor except it appears that the last ingredient is a side chain compression, which this compressor does not have.

Are there any free compressors that have the same features as Fabfilter Pro-C even if I have to manually set everything?

FTR, this is what I hate most about doing these. Eventually I'm going to get the same effect (provided such a feature actually exists in a free compressor) so why can't I get that effect without having to wrack my brains to do it?

I know the preset you're talking about, it's nice. :) I don't think you'll find any free compressors with this setting, or many other compressors at all, really. It's all about mid/side processing. However, you could split the signal into mid/side and apply different compression to side than to mid (this is more-or-less, what the preset is doing, though it correlates the signal through a sidechain; you could do this through reaper, but it would get very complicated with other hosts, maybe). To get a similarly pleasing (but different) effect, I just suggest using Flux Stereo Tool and widen the signal. Alternately, as I mentioned, you could futz around with Mid/side processing to different compressors and routing to emulate exactly what Pro-C is doing.

Frustrating. Okay, how exactly do you "split" the signal? I've never tried doing this.

Perfect! The MSED combined with the compressor gives the same exact effect as the Pro-C.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

A tip for FL Studio users (and maybe others). When I have the Noisemaker synth's GUI up, it tends to add some problems. I try to manipulate the synth through the DAW's sources and leave the synth GUI off. Probably something to do with the synth's visual updating messing with the resources. Just something I noticed :tu:

Ok, I took the time to re-save all my presets to native format so they will work natively.

Here are 151 presets I made for Noisemaker a while back. Mac AU format only sorry. If I have time I'll try to save in native format.

Try Tokyo Dawn's eq, the free version, you can use it clean or dial in saturation at will.

Or get the new Pultecstyle clone by Ignite Amps
