Who will and will not be around in 10 years?

These are slightly satirical predictions as no one can see the future. All I can say is prove me wrong and we'll talk in another 18 years.

I think the first statement can be applied to the entire thread. As to the second statement, I think if anything won't be around in 10 years it will be most forums. Here's a quote I ran into just the other day in another thread in another forum. Like what has become typical in the "10 Years" thread here and in the one in which I found the quote, too many of these become all attitude and little or no facts or substance:

"It's very disheartening to see well-natured souls taken advantage of by having their time wasted. One of the reasons I've stopped visiting audio forums and posting. Forums are a dying media and this is just another nail in its coffin.

"... This **** might be good for a laugh over at KVR or Audio*, but it won't win you any friends here - the largest music producers forum on the internet.... Every other thread at KVR these days seems to be a wind up along these lines. It wears you down after a while and you stop visiting audio forums because of **** like this.

"So, you got your rise. I know how it goes from here. I know what you are going to say before you've even said it. There are only so many lines of attack open to you now - all well tried and tested and seen before.

"Don't give up your day job (and if your day job is trolling, then you'll have to do better at that as well)."

Who said it and what their topic was isn't really important, is it? What counts is that it was well-said and applies just about anywhere the tone is degraded to what we read above and elsewhere here. What really got my attention most was something I've been wondering about myself lately, as I seem to have more and more trouble finding pertinent and helpful info about any Product X without having to wade through post after post of posters' fictions, snark and rhetoric. This: "Forums are a dying media and this is just another nail in its coffin." This has become my conclusion as well, so maybe there won't be another conversion in 18 years. However, I expect most of the software the experts here have predicted doom upon will still be moving along nicely. So, maybe the topic here has value but the focus simply needs changing?

Predictions:

Image-Line will continue to push FL Studio but essentially will become the new Propellerheads Reason and start to fade from existence.

Don't all software companies 'push' their software? FWIW we haven't paid for any FL Studio marketing in over 10 years now.

A few of people (in forums like KVR) have been predicting the demise of FL Studio for the last 18 years. The Lifetime Free Updates model is far more powerful than you probably think.

I find KVR (and other forums) very useful... I think they are an invaluable resource for checking out what is going on with other users. I cannot mention the number of times I have been helped out, found out solutions, discovered about bugs, had how-to questions answered, or made purchasing decisions based on the experiences of other users.

what would take the place of forums?

Much to the delight of many Karma_tba will not be around in ten years. I was diagnosed with thoracic cancer Stage 4 inoperable, incurable in 2006. They gave me a year and a half to live. Miraculously with chemo, radiation and palliative therapy I have survived for ten years. Many times I had no desire to see another day,but my music gave me something to live for. I have not enjoyed the support or understanding of my family,my "friends", and/or peers. Sometimes I continued just to spite all of the above. I even refused care,but my therapists had the police, against my will, admit me to the hospital. During that experience I had nothing but the music, and I'm grateful for it. I am a realist and pragmatic, so I realize that the clock is ticking. So the next time you feel the need to be sarcastic, cynical, and make some snarky comment in this forum try to remember to have compassion and gratitude for the gift you've been given and that there is a human being on the other end of your comments. This sums it up exactly for cakewalk, although I believe they will stick around because they have found their niche, that being guitar players and other performers who want something powerful but simple for their recordings. Sonar is powerful - the parts of it that work anyway. It used to not be so far behind, what seems like not that many years ago... nowadays if you try to make electronic music in Sonar... better hope your stuff consists of stock loops and generic triads like ilan bluestone...

reason started off the previous decade from a position of weakness... they had a choice to make, upgrade their crappy 1999 framework or sit on their reputation and milk their cow, they chose the latter, now are irrelevant.
FL is starting this coming decade as the most powerful and flexible DAW without contest - its only problems are inaccessibility and steep learning curve.

Are you aware that there still are far more guitar players than electronic music "producers"?

Right now the companies I would doubt will be around in 10 years are: Propellerheads (Shrinking market share, outdated product)...

People were saying the same types of things about the Props 10 years ago and yet they still remain one of the larger DAW companies, although it may not seem like that on a VST/AU oriented forum like this one. I think it's really the global market which has changed the most, expanding and diversifying exponentially over the past decade allowing many more DAW/instrument developers to exist without needing to fight to be in the "top 5" to be relevant. As long as PH continues to provide a unique enough experience to their niche of the market, I'm sure they'll survive, even if that means a gradual evolution toward touch/pen oriented mobile. I suspect everyone will start heading in that direction eventually, but I don't see Apple abandoning the Mac. It's still the development platform on which they and 3rd parties build all of their software and operating systems.

I kind of agree with some of the sentiments shared here about users forums like this one though. They already feel about 5 years buried in the relevance grave and in another decade of social media evolution can well imagine them being reduced to the tiniest fraction of user interaction by old schoolers (like me).

I totally agree and I believe places like KVR, Reddit and the really big players will continue. I used to be a member of loads of forums and even though some had almost 3000 members, they either lie dormant or are completely gone today. Social Media is to blame. It's because of Facebook that the forum is a dying/dead platform. Too bad since the forums offer a topic search withing itself whereas Facebook has nothing. Try to find a topic which hasn't been updated in months....virtually impossible. Forums are great discussion places as well due to their static nature. Social Media are dynamic platforms and don't work for archiving purposes. Sadly most people don't give a s**t...they're already on to the next selfie, stupid meme or pointless YouTube video. Welcome to 2016: Things aren't looking good.

As for developers being in business, there's a few I hope will be - but that doesn't med they WILL be.

I'll be happy to see a continuation of what's often is referred to as "the toy" ( ) - FL Studio.

what wont be gone (as long as I'm still breathing) is my passion and drive, I've used two cassette decks, two mics, and two speakers to a fully blown DAW over 44 years and 47 1/2 weeks. I'll go with my flow and I know technology will continue to leave me several paths to choose from

Almost bought fruity loops 2. something. I was only 15 though so it was pretty much impossible back then to buy, so no fruity for me The price was something ridiculous.
