I got fed up of coding and remebered what I was in this crap for in the first place - making music!
Rebooted to DAW mode - fired up Tracktion. Found a nice sound on the ImpOSCar, mmmh, nice anal sex type bass-line. Then got a wee ricki-tiki-taka-taka going on the uTonic. Then for beef I fired up NS kit 7 (medium) through DS-404. Started whacking the beats.
poppity f**king click - CPU all red in the face!!!
It runs better when I've got my normal boot! With millions of shit runnning? My DAW boots as clean and empty as my sex life! Nothing apart from T and plugs.
P4 3gig, 1gig ram, delta66!!
It never runs smooth! That's why I do coding instead of music! Its pissing me off. And yes I've done all the tweaky stuff on musicxp.
I hear folk running effortless on 2ghz 512meg laptops! What the f**k is going on!?!?

:help:

Sounds like a denormal to me... one of the plugins you're running? Was it DS-404 that got things all goofy?

Post

Hmmmm... No useful suggestions here. Actually throwing a bit of salt on the wound, I am running flawlessly on a 1.2 GHz 512 Meg desktop. I can usually run three or four Vsts and a couple of effects before puking. So something definitely wrong there.

did you try the 'add-low-level-noise'-trick? :?

Post

That was the last thing I added yes.

It's been there for donkeys. Have they updated it? I've had denormals before. Any alternatives? Can't afford decent sampler.

edit: DS-404 that is.

Don't know if it was on. Means a complete reboot to check! I think I'd used DS-404 without probs before though.

Have you tried sfz? It only costs nothing... might be a bit of a PITA to build stuff in it, though...

Would "low level noise aunty denorm shit" make a difference on a sampler? I thought that shit just applied to fx like reverb? I mean the samplers making it's own noise. Ts not giving it anything so the add noise crap is irrelevent right? or wrong?

the sampler doesn't play all the time, or does it? :?

I had a kick going via midi part. apart from that I was just walloping keys getting ready to record.

the time between the kicks should be silence actually and silence means there can be denormals
then afaik :?

In addition to it sounding mightily just like a denormals problem, I would follow the recommendation to switch to sfz.

I use it for my nskit now (version 7), but using the sfz mapping rather than the soundfont version. pljones has an sfz mapping of it HERE. You have to download the .wav versions of the NSKit to go with it, though, at the usual spot.

More salt in the wound-- I'm on an Athlon 1700+ with 512MG RAM, and I can easily run more than what you were describing.
