What if it is the most spectacular Modular Software Synthesis System ever created !

How likely is that ?

Post

I guess I'm also wondering if this is going to be an announcement or if it will be for sale immediately?

My guess is that it will be an announcement for something that will be available sometime in early 2017. Knowing Spectrasonics, we'd be seeing teaser videos and lots of hype by now if the release was going to be immediate.

Extremely unlikely - they already have a synth, and this is a 4th instrument.

I strongly doubt it will be a wait until 2017 for release. It could be as long as 3 months (as per Omni 2), but without the ticking clock that was NAMM, I'd hope they'd have held the publicity back til the product is much nearer being ready to ship. It could even be available immediately, but I'd have thought time to get product to retailers etc means there might be a month or two's wait. Impulse guess - November 1.

My vague guess is, they are directly entering the orchestral soundtrack arena, albeit with a twist of some sort. Strings, brass, woodwinds, percs... maybe only one of these (percs), or almost all of these (everything but percs), in a juiced-up Omnisphere-derived engine, with a lot of tricks up its sleeve.

Yeah, in today's landscape, not the most exciting guess :D, but considering when they started working on it, that's my guess anyway. And I kinda hope it will be something entirely different, unless it's indeed that AND amaaaazing.

Alternatively, an all-in spectral engine and instrument à la Iris.

So for the sheer hell of it, and at the not inconsiderable risk of looking stupid if it turns out to be that kazoo library that I previously ridiculed, here's the kind of instrument I'm expecting tomorrow.

Guitars! Electric - Les Paul, Strat, Telecaster etc. Acoustic - Nylon, Steel, 12 string. Semi Acoustic. E-bow. Ukes, Banjos, Dobro. World instruments eg Charango, Oud etc. Esoteric samples. Very large library between 50-100gb.

Electric models recorded clean (DI) and amped in an appropriate style. Amp modelling in the FX section for use with clean.

Front page for each instrument a la Trilian with quick controls, possibly a graphic of amp / mic etc.

STEAM-based. Stripped down Omni 2 synth engine - no wavetables, inc Granular and Harmonia.

Comprehensive FX section - most of Omni 2's FX, plus new amp and stomp box specific FX. No plugin version.

Strum engine based on the Omni Arp, with added control of articulations (up / down stroke etc)

Intelligent scripting to map keys to appropriate strings

Large number of patches including many synth-type leads, pads etc using guitar soundsources.

All patches able to be loaded into Omni 2

I think many would be disappointed by this - some because they have little interest in guitars, others because they feel they have all they need already, others because they usually play real guitar. But if this is anything remotely like the thing announced tomorrow, I think there really will be nothing else like it on the market and it will add hugely to the core samples available in Omni. And it would be another huge hit.

PS - additional thought. Maybe some high profile names to contribute. Top of my wishlist - Johnny Marr.

I'm still gunning for an actual Stylus that or a giant coffee mug with a built in warmer.

I'd also go for a standalone Omnisphere 2 with just pads in it.. for cheap because I'm cheap and don't really want to install gigs of content I won't use. :hihi:

Loads of fun.. trust me :)

I remember that people often asked for more traditionell orchestrial and other acoustic multi sampled content for Omnisphere in the last years.
Eric mostly said that there is already enough for it in the market and Spectrasonics won't enter this area.
But hey....since this would be unexpected then....

I too lean towards a guitar or orchestral model. Omnisphere really covers the synth world about as good as anything could. Trilian is my goto bass anyway. I never used Stylus but with that and the other two products, the VSTi world is narrowed to something they have not done yet.

Guitar- probably the easiest for them to get to. They have everything in place to really make it happen and happen well. Plus they have experience in doing basses as well as guitar sample libraries.

Orchestra- there is a lot of competition in the marketplace for this one. Not that guitars don't have a lot of competition...but I am thinking about cost effectiveness. It probably cost much less to sample a variety of guitars than it does a whole orchestra in detail. But they could do it. If they did, I have no idea how they kept it quiet until now.

They could really lean towards some heavy physically modeled stuff, but I just don't know how that would generate a lot of enthusiasm.

But we DO know it is an "instrument".

My sense told me that it's going to be a decent Drum machine, with an innovative Drum Synth engine and interactive sequencer, plus loads of quality multi-sample drums and modern cinematic/ethnic percussion. Then they're back with a Trinity of Synth, Bass and Drum. So far what they have is basically a drum sample player with limited kits, a true Spectrasonics quality Drum machine still a missing link and worth the 10 years in the making. It will be full of mind blowing features, fxs, modular capability, ability to load samples and using the Omnisphere engine. Stylus will have an update later and stay as a great loop mangler and will integrate with the new Drum Machine in the future.
