Some of the presets probably had the output gain boosted to much, thus the crackling. Morphing those drones could be interesting, I'll try that once I've collected the next bunch.

In the meantime I've just uploaded a simple experiment of my own. A simple sequence played by Hive with the dry/wet setting set to dry to begin with and is then automated to fade out the incoming signal quite quickly. I then automate things like SIMPLIFY and RICHNESS to get a subtly changing sound.

Pretty easy 4ndy, see it that way for a simpler vision:

When clicking on Freeze, Adaptiverb catches a small portion of the processed audio that is going and literally freezes it and loops it, endlessly. That ‘loop’ or frozen audio is then stored in a preset OR your DAW session if you saved and it plays and self-drives itself automatically. It works like pretty much any other freeze tools like granulators or spectral freezers.

Hi, yeah, I kinda getting that bit, but when I save a preset of my own now it's not saving any audio with the preset, so much reading and experimenting going on at the moment.

What I'm thinking is that maybe you're hitting FREEZE when there's no input, and the fact that you're hearing "frozen" audio is because maybe you have SUSTAIN at max, or the Ray Trace verb on and SIZE at max? Those two are not in the preset, but would keep the sound going infinitely, too – even if the actual FREEZE buffer is empty because you hit FREEZE during silence.

The FREEZE function freezes the INPUT, not the content of the reverb/sustain.

The way to check this is:

1) set sustain to minimum, and reverb size (if in ray trace mode) to any value that is not near the max; for simplicity, set it to minimum.

2) set REVERB SOURCE to 50/50

3) hit FREEZE while you're hearing audio in the DRY path

4) you should now hear frozen audio coming from the FREEZE function.

Save this. Load the preset. Is it playing now? If not, load while playing back audio (specifically: while the input is NOT silent). Is it playing now?

As I tried to explain: it's not storing an audio file but a sample buffer - if you look at the preset size -> it's identical to normal presets which don't use the Freeze function, all presets have an equal size of 89 KB.

Did a quick look at the VST bindings, imports and exports and saw a lot of the KITTY package data, but nothing pointing to how the properties are interpreted. No FLAC or other audio data type that was obvious.

Just curious, you know.

I like the Blue Cat products - I have Patchwork, Plug'n Script and Remote Control. It's nice to see what can be done with their tool set.

If I open a drone pad, say "Pad 001 Orchestral Amin" for instance, and then do a "Save as..." it does not retain the same properties as the original. That is, it doesn't have the same "buffer" and does not even make a sound if I select it again.

Is that normal for Adaptiverb?

I see that the saved preset (except for personal preferences) is the same as the original.
Here is that patch's freeze buffer in the preset and in a saved copy.

I don't think it's useful to discuss internal preset structures - I should not have brought it up. I'm just a nerd.

Okay, I tried a few things.

I found the factory presets here:-

C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\ADAPTIVERB VST3 data\Presets\009 Drones\Pads

And the user presets are stored here:-

C:\Users\andy\Documents\Zynaptiq\ADAPTIVERB\Presets

I copied the following factory presets, using Windows File Explorer, to the user preset area:-

Default.preset
Pad 001 Orchestral Amin.preset
Pad 013 Orchestral Cmaj7.preset

So now, in Adaptiverb, I can see those presets on the first page of the drop-down menu. I'm going to be swapping backwards and forwards between default and the other presets so having that in the user area to makes it quicker to select.

If I now select the user version of "Pad 001 Orchestral Amin" I hear a pleasant pad sound.

If I then select the user version of "Pad 013 Orchestral Cmaj7" I hear another, but different pleasant pad sound.

I can now switch backwards and forwards between those two pad drones and the sound changes accordingly, and as expected. The "Amin" pad still sounds the same as it was before and the "Cmaj7" pad also sounds the same as it did before.

I should also add that they sound exactly the same as their factory preset versions too.

I will now select the user "Amin" preset, and do a "Save As..." and call that new preset "TEST01"

The "Amin" pad sound was playing while I did that and it is still playing now, so I get the impression that the "Save As..." went okay.

If I now go back to the user "Cmaj7" preset I hear the sound I expect to hear, which was playing before.

If I then go back to the "TEST01" preset, I do not hear the "Amin" preset sound now, but something completely different. Something more, but not quite like the "Cmaj7" sound.

If I now select the "Default" preset I get silence, as I expect for this preset.

If I then select the "TEST01" preset, I still get silence.

I then selected the user "Amin" preset and selected "Save" from the drop-down menu. I did not change any parameters at all.

I can still hear the "Amin" pad sound, but if I switch to "Default" and then back to "Amin" all I get is silence.
