I don't think they are listening to their customers. Everybody wanted a Stylus RMX 2. This product is really niche. And sure, the sound quality is probably the best but I'm sure the playing feel of these rare keyboards had a lot to do with the pleasure of playing them too, not just the sound. You change the sound but it's always the same mechanical keyboard action.

I think you have to look at it being a labour of love for Eric – note the inclusion of a JD800 Rhodes preset right at the bottom of the list of sampled keyboards along with a couple of MKS programs. "What do I want? Well it's some classic keyboards like the ones I really like playing." The rest just followed from there.
Though I'm at a loss to explain the toy pianos – how many do you need in a sample library that isn't the UVI toys one?

1. Who on earth is going to buy this "new instrument"?? Who needs a $400 library of Clavs and electric pianos??
I'm sure this instrument is very nice, but I am not in the least interested in it.
2. There are thousands of Stylus RMX owners who were hoping for an update and our hopes have been dashed. But there is no word from Spectrasonics on this - your secrecy is getting really frustrating. Or are you just disrespecting your clients? Why can't you just say if there will be an update to RMX, and more or less when?
I lost a LOT of respect for Spectrasonics today. This new product is neither innovative nor interesting.
And I now give up on Stylus RMX. I need a new drum tool and it won't be a Spectrasonics product, even if they release an update for it next week.
Who can recommend a decent replacement for Stylus RMX?
I'm gonna get Native Instruments Maschine Mikro MK2 for cheaper than this whole keyboard library

Some of you might be surprised by this, but I actually like this enough to demo it. I'm no keyboard player, but, the subtle variety in the dynamics of the electric pianos sounds really good to my ears. I think that this is the kind of instrument that Eric is really good at, that is, sampling the subtle playable details and applying effects. Granted, those players play WAY better than I could ever hope to be, but really nice dynamics make a difference to me when I'm playing.
I think that this kind of thing is where Eric's attention to detail really adds value to an instrument.
This thread tho, best thread ever, and some of the comments are killer. No, I'm not "blown away by surprise", however, I think that it's a really valid approach to just focus on a quality collections of samples and bundle them together. I'm not going to run out and buy this tomorrow, but I will keep it in mind and I'm definitely going to demo it.

Um, no - these folks (legends mostly, yes) have been playing with Eric's stuff for years. BTW, did you mean this Jordan Rudess clip?Elektronisch wrote:...So basicly Spectrasonics hired some keyboard warriors who played 1 or 2 instruments in entire life, probably never heard anything coming out of computer...
Nice enough, yes lotsa notes, but it sounds like a stock VI piano to me (at first I wondered if it was a CP70 type affair actually). Not really the same league, but that's ok - it's not meant to be like-for-like. For many people, Sample Tank will be enough.
I agree with the labour of love thing. Spectrasonics just do their own thing, pretty much. Just adding some RMX expansion from the right decade would be the easiest thing in the world for them, but they want to do things on their own terms, in their own way. They hear us, but don't hear us. It kinda annoys me that - still - nobody else has stepped up to the plate with rhythm, and as long as they don't Spectrasonics can take all the time they like over it. If a competitor really did something special, it might well eat into the their margins as it would become a new standard, but I've been expecting that to happen for over 5 years now, and there's zip out there (no, not Geist 2, not Battery, not Breaktweaker et al - something quick, intuitive, creative, rhythmic, musical, vast, deep).
If you did happen to be one of the five people waiting for Spectrasonics to do a piano library, then surely you'd watch that intro video and say "golly gosh-a-mighty, that was worth the wait". We just gotta hope that the same will be true for beats. We all know the stock phrase - do you want it fast, or do you want it right? Spectrasonics do take that to the absolute extreme. But honestly the biggest knock there for me was not this insane wait for a beats update, but Omni 2 though - terrific though it is, it doesn't have that uniformly immaculately conceived and executed feel about it. I thought the deal was it we wait long enough it would be near-perfect, but (sorry) that bloody awful hash they made of the tagging. And yes Sound Match does help compensate, but I don't expect compensation from Spectrasonics, I expect perfection. Dammit.

You will most likely have to go to a music store to demo.ghettosynth wrote:Some of you might be surprised by this, but I actually like this enough to demo it. I agree basicly with this opinion. But...xx JPRacer xx wrote:I don't think they are listening to their customers. Everybody wanted a Stylus RMX 2. This product is really niche...
Although Eric Persing, if anybody, knows this is business, I see in this project Eric's own, personal preferencies, more than a well calculated business move. This is a long term investment from the Spectrasonics, and digitising these instruments can be seen also as a "cultural heritage preservation" project. This is part of Spectrasonics (=Eric's) brand, more than a fast selling product. These money come back to the Spectrasonics in the long run.
I can't afford me to buy this software, at least not right now, and had wished next Stylus. But I salute Eric, the Man.

Of course, I know that. Not ideal, but not impossible. I demoed omni that way, didn't buy it.ATS wrote:You will most likely have to go to a music store to demo.ghettosynth wrote:Some of you might be surprised by this, but I actually like this enough to demo it. Sounds amazing, the pianos & electric pianos sounds & dynamics are incredible, you can tell the passion & work that's been put into it
I'm sure we'll hear it all over Top 40 albums & movie scores
I was expecting a "GuitarVerse" plugin, and I'm sure it will arrive someday, along with a new version of Stylus on steroïds, but I'm really happy they released an Ultimate Keys plugin, it was something I was also hoping they would make one day
Congrats to Eric & Spectrasonics team, this will become a GoTo plugin for keys

Well, perhaps I have to be the party pooper, but: those demos sounded rather synthetic to my ears. The first EP sounds exaggerated, the grand piano sounds too shiny and plastic, almost sterile. It's very much the Roland sound, and to my ears far from the last word in realism. Nicely modeled key response, no doubt, but Pianoteq does that too, or the stock EP88 Logic plugin.
So yes, a niche product.
