It largely mitigates issues with dongles 'breaking off' or getting lost.
I have a piece of velcro on the back of my laptop and on a usb-hub that I keep my dongles on. It easily attaches there and plugs in with a very slim right-angle usb extension. Basically fool-proof.
Even if you don't use a laptop and are worried about 'breaking it off', or have trouble reaching around to get to your dongle... use a USB extension.
ilok makes me sad again

Not picking on anyone, but......
A guy makes a thread because they are having an issue that is frustrating. But it's a blanket statement that is later rectified. In between, there is much nonsense
I have both iloks. I swore I'd never get either, but they are mostly ok. I'm more worried about stuff like waves which if for some reason you have off the cloud and on a bad stick or HD, (make slit throat gesture)

Waves systems blows the sh1tty iLok out of the water any day any time when it comes to user friendliness. First you have close to instant support when stuff brakes. Second you don't have to pay 50$ for a proprietary 1$ usb stick. And third, if things really go bad you can reset your licenses yourself, so any downtime can be avoided at all times.incubus wrote: I'm more worried about stuff like waves which if for some reason you have off the cloud and on a bad stick or HD, (make slit throat gesture)

That's what worries me. But, so far, I've always moved/kept my stuff on a stick that hasn't broken.
Nothing terrible dreadful these days (though some waves stuff is difficult to replace, like the aural exciter)

The difference is that currently iLok is not cracked (some specific plug-ins were months ago however). Waves plugins are all cracked.robotmonkey wrote:Waves systems blows the sh1tty iLok out of the water any day any time when it comes to user friendliness. So it's a bit strange to say the Waves system is better when it doesn't do its job at all.

Pretty much every single plugin by every major iLok using company is cracked. Yes, some of those plugins have had minor updates since then and have not been released again (yet) but if this makes any difference is purely academic.Robert Randolph wrote:

As every Waves plugin since v4 (that's as far as I remember), weather iLoked or not, has also been cracked I'd recon it made sense for them to go with their own system instead of paying Pace for their "protection". Waves was obviously iLok's biggest client after Avid so they must have saved huge amounts of money. Their plugins are still cracked but they have probably realized that it's better to sell plugins and try to be user friendly instead of making the paying customer a casualty in the war against piracy.

This is not true. There was a very specific exploit used for 2 different sets of bypasses, one for Windows and one for OS X. Not all plug-ins were subject to this and depending on which bypass was used, a certain plug-in may only be available for Windows or Mac.robotmonkey wrote:Pretty much every single plugin by every major iLok using company is cracked. Anyway, discussing this is probably against forum rules very nearly. The point remains that Waves protection only hinders legitimate customers for no benefit. iLok is currently protecting the assets of the manufacturers.

I agree that Mac versions were somewhat saved. On Windows I actually can't think of any developer whose products were spared.Robert Randolph wrote:There was a very specific exploit used for 2 different sets of bypasses, one for Windows and one for OS X. What's funny is that Pace iLok is the only cp that has an actual long history of hindering legitimate customers in a pretty bad way. In that regard it's the worst by far without any competition. Waves, NI, Arturia, eLicencer, u-he - all the alternatives have been better and more customer friendlier.

no, it's more like blaming a car company because you broke your car key...these days I use no dongles, there are times to blame ilok this is not one. An egg is quite fragile, comparing it to a dongle is a stretch.dayjob wrote:sort of like saying "it's not the egg's fault you dropped it"AnX wrote:None of which are a fault of the the usb stick or the softwaredayjob wrote:
on the safe side until you travel with it in your laptop and break it off.. or lose it or it gets stolen etc.
(Not that im saying ilok is good, its not)
and, yes of course.. but it's a risk for some people.. like me.which is all i was saying. what's the point of having a fast laptop for making music when i travel if i can't use the software i paid for because i broke the dongle that is the copy protection scheme? might as well just not bring it along at all.
Oddly I see people using thumb drives all the time without complaints that the company is to blame if they lose what they ave stored on them if they lose or break them. But then the difference there is they made the choice, but still there are ways to secure your dongle.

I also blame Windows 10. It causes all sorts of little issues, had to deinstall/reinstall Pace iLok a couple times when my DAW reports the ilok service is not running, only after upgrading to Win10 (and the issues did not appear immediately)

I can come up with at least two developers that has (afaik) software that hasn't been touched. Steven Slate and Softube.robotmonkey wrote:I agree that Mac versions were somewhat saved. Waves support is definitely a lot better. But other than some exceptions (e.g. Wave Central transition), if you got no WUP and hope they deposit new license for you outside of the recovery option in WC, good luck with that.robotmonkey wrote:Waves systems blows the sh1tty iLok out of the water any day any time when it comes to user friendliness. Why can't more dev pick up Propellerhead codemeter version of protection? 1 hardware auth + 1 dongle auth + online login auth when you have neither. Not perfect, but so much more flexible compare to what ilok/elicenser is offering right now.
