Is dissonance bad?

i'm into video game soundtrack composing, so definitely "dissonance" is something really essential
, maybe not for common listeners taste, but oldskool people will love music with this element!

I would say that 'Lux Aeterna' by Ligetti is quite a good example of dissonance sounding fantastic. It's the vocal piece that Kubrick used when the monolith appears in the film 2001.
Out of tune is, well... Out of tune!

Maybe think of plainness vs. richness and simple vs. complex instead of consonance vs. dissonance.
Dissonance does not mean so much without context. Mostly relative.
Maybe you hear a "dissonant" sound at the beginning of a piece. Only seems dissonant because you arrived there from silence.

I'm not a musician, but I've designed sounds that others use to make music. http://soundcloud.com/obsidiananvil

Not necessarily, like pretty much everything else it can work in some situations like for example in more somber songs like this one(starts at 1:28) :

theres a "good" dissonance and a "bad" one though. the bad one, is like pitch bending, long drawn out LFOs that are harmonically just a little bit too much tonally off of other persistent tones....will make your head explode if listened to for too long.
overlapping tones that are fundamentally very similar, relatively, but dissimilar enough that they begin to hurt your brain and can cause disorientation.
in very short passing moments you can get away with. but persistently "bad" dissonance is extremely unpleasant. like someone singing 20 cents off pitch for 5 minutes...and maybe the guitarist is also 30 cents off in the other direction...the bassist is on. this will give you pain.

Or this?
NOTE: This is great music. IMO, from one of the true musical geniuses of the XXth century.
That's not dissonance, that's out of tune playing. Very unpleasant, because it is "out" of "tune".zethus909 wrote: in very short passing moments you can get away with. but persistently "bad" dissonance is extremely unpleasant. like someone singing 20 cents off pitch for 5 minutes...and maybe the guitarist is also 30 cents off in the other direction...the bassist is on. this will give you pain.

The first one was the easy-listening version. Don't whatever you do watch 2001: A Space Odyssey.zethus909 wrote:oh gawd....that music should be illegal, or used for torture purposes only. making music that is purposefully dissonant is![]()

You think dissonance is bad? Extreme consonance can send you a bit stir crazy after a while as well. Try a day with nothing but Palestrina's motets for company.
