Zebra Legacy (Zebra2)

Post

So i just noticed over on the repro Alpha thread...

Z3 has Wavefolders!!!

I for one am mother-flipping excited about this, as so far for me, only the melda wavefolder has come anywhere close to sounding like the analog ones in my modular rig.

Thanks Urs and I'm glad you got the modular bug!! :)

Sorry for my English, it is a translator ......

I want to buy Zebra 2. I have read the beginning of the post that the upgrade to zebra 3 will be only $ 30. Is that correct ?

Post

That is correct.

Thanks for the answer, this post was written in 2012.

I do not know if the boys U-HE still think the same.

I understand that they will schedule Zebra3 from 0.

Mr. Urs could confirm that?

They continue with the fantastic idea to upgrade to 30 $?

Thank you.

This thread came about because there was a bit of premature talk (mea culpa) about Zebra3 back then - whenever a feature request wasn't something that could be done in Zebra2, I simply said I'd do it in Zebra3 then, partly joking but partly not.

Anyhow, at some point in 2011/2012 people started asking if they should wait for Zebra3. That went particularly strong once I confirmed that Zebra3 would certainly receive better filters, almost Diva quality but less CPU.

So people stopped buying Zebra2 and started waiting for Zebra3, even though we hadn't done anything else other than some doodles for some user interface ideas. And of course we had collected some things that we would do better than what was set in stone with Zebra2. However, it was clear that this wasn't happening anytime soon. There were quite a few bits and bops that had to be developed first, and there were a gazillion of unfinished projects that had to be finished. Much of that were bugfixes and improvements that we finalised for last year's big maintenance release.

So to counter the problem that Zebra sales went down, I came up with the pricing policy mentioned in this post. It's immediately obvious that buying Zebra2 first, then upgrade to Zebra3 is cheaper than waiting for Zebra3, no matter how long it takes. This won't change.

Essentially, this thread came about to say "Hey, don't give up on Z2 just yet, Zebra3 is gonna take a while".

Unfortunately things took, well, a many times longer than I had expected. I would never have thought that a few years later we pretty much have all technologies available, but no prototype to show.

Post

Wait, no prototypes is not quite true. We do have a modal synthesis engine, a pretty cool filter bank type effect, a nice take on bucket brigades, a really great optimisation to Spline based modeling, a sample importer (for wavetables), an amazing phaser and probably a few other things I haven't mentioned yet.

Just rename Zebra 2 to Zebra 3 and we will be happy-))

In 5 years we will revisit this thread again and ask what we are waiting for while Zebra 2.9. just is still great :hihi:
It´s an interesting effect on humans when they hear something new "might" come the "old" things are dated now. It´s the same with like every year a new smartphone/tablet nonsense.
I got trapped in that too but now that i don´t bother anymore i feel free and have more joy to use even my oldest tools...... :D

...or U-he wants to do also a "10 years in the making announcement" :clown:

When Z3 is released any prior versions should be referred to as the Quagga.

"I was wondering if you'd like to try Magic Mushrooms"
"Oooh I dont know. Sounds a bit scary"
"It's not scary. You just lose a sense of who you are and all that sh!t"
