does anyone run win32 VST binaries on linux? i heard there was a cpu overhead. how much is it? assuming this thing does that. i just dont understand, from the looks of it, this company is full of weathered professionals, then they come up with this thing, that proably nobody will buy..well, its not my business and im not buying one, but how do they expect to compete with a laptop ?
btw: "Receptor can run VST plug-ins from the best developers in the world without the complexity and fragility of a computer." --- er whoa, how do you VST plugins without a computer? i'd love to know, this could be a MAJOR breakthrough in technology...
and hey, i bet they used some open source software in there somewhere, doesnt this mean they have to release the source?

i think they are hoping to draw on the widespread paranoia of your laptop crashing during a live set.
Honestly if your laptop is set up correctly and you are using stable plugs this should never happen though.

No doubt, it's gonna be a hard sell here more than anywhere else. I'm very eager to hear from the devs on the 23rd..
But I think it DOES have a large advantage especially for guitarists that don't wanna boot a machine, load a DAW, load the plugs, set your routing, etc, etc..
If I can load my plugs in this thing & fire it up as an FX loop in my guitar rack I'm half-way sold already.
That kind of plug & play has a great appeal to me & being able to do that without a windoze OS is
But it could be also stated plainly that opinions I respect here like Rob's & db's about building your own unit to do the same thing..well..build one & I'll be glad to consider buying it. Seriously, this could be a great opportunity as these external devices are still experiencing growing pains, and I'm sure there's more of a market for these things than meets the eye here at KvR...in a way I think they were smart to invest in this website; we are a target group strictly becuase of just how much we know about computers & VST & interface issues & all that shit..
What I mean is if they find a way to make it appealing to us, they're gonna be able to sell it to a dead man..
I see the second generation Muse bieng a very attractive proposal if it can get past the sticky fumblings of the initial production...

You got me thinking: my Cubase SX lets you save a default project that starts when you load SX. You can load SX with hokeys from the desktop. (Alt-C say)sickle666 wrote: But I think it DOES have a large advantage especially for guitarists that don't wanna boot a machine, load a DAW, load the plugs, set your routing, etc, etc..
All we need now is a hot key system to load the next song, previous song, etc. Maybe have a little floating vcr type control bar.
I realize tht this idea has limitations. It's still on Windows and you'd want a heavy duty case. Plus $50
for a tech to install your computer in a case.
Once I'm convinced that linux can run vst's reliably,
good bye windows!
Food for thought. I have already thought about trying out the Linux Muse software (GPL) for myselfBut it could be also stated plainly that opinions I respect here like Rob's & db's about building your own unit to do the same thing..well..build one & I'll be glad to consider buying it. and so far have Debian Linux and Muse loaded. Will have to spend more time with it to see how to get the vsti's running.
The great thing about the Linux kernel is that you can recompile it only with the options that you want. Don't want networking support in the kernel? Just uncheck a couple of tick marks in the config utility and recompile the kernel. The result is a very small fast application specific kernel without the bloat and resulting potential for errors.

No, I would not buy a Muse for the EVM stuff.sickle666 wrote:Say what? I may be mistaking you, but did you just suggest you want a Muse because EVM's stuff is on it?gnu23 wrote: So the big takeaway for me here is the EVM Synthpack...I hadn't heard these before, and while not all of them have MP3 demos, what I did hear was pretty good - any comments/experience on EVM?
That's like a $30 to $50 SE plug pack, man..I own the EVM stuff & they're all great & all, but that's hardly a selling point for this thing, is it?
Rob, same here, it's going in the guitar rack if it's going anwhere..since we live on two different blocks it's a beautiful thing as I'd have to take you out
By "takeaway" I mean that as a result of reading about EVM Synpack on this thread, I went over to EVM's site and listened to all of the demos that were there. I may have seen EVM's stuff before but didn't pay attention for one reason or the other - but I did pay attention this time. I liked what I heard - enough so that I pulled a mini thread-hijack to get opinions from folks with more experience with Synpack1.
We shall see orchestral machines with a thousand new sounds, with thousands of new euphonies, as opposed to the present day's simple sounds of strings, brass, and woodwinds. -- George Antheil, circa 1925 ---

I think the Muse idea is a good one, but I don't need one.

The EVM stuff I consider very underrated, great sounds with first class GUI design. There is a huge amount of material there for $30..
Only downside is he does not send out update emails, so you have to just stop in every now & again & see what's updated.

OT: I can't download a single thing off EVMs site. It used to be slow, but this is ridiculous...

While people here might be able to build a machine speced similarly to Receptor, many musicians won't know were to start.
While people here think of it as a 'crippled' computer, the fact it doesn't look like a PC and has a 'hardware' interface out of the box (instead of a mouse+keyboard+monitor thing) will probably be a trong selling point.
This is a computer indeed, but one dressed-up like an old piece of hardware. To the avarage KvRer (or KvRaf, or whatever) it might be a shortcoming. To the computer-illiterate, mildly technophobic musician it can be a good reason to buy it.
Outside of KvR, these guys still rule the world.

I like the idea of just flipping open a laptop, starting up Live 4 and playing my songs. I'd consider Replicator as an addon but if I were going to carry a separate monitor, keyboard and mouse along with Rep to a gig then I might as well take my PC.
Most laptops and PC's come with WinXP installed. If you want a cut down WinXP that's more stable then get XPLite and get rid of IE and the rest. Boot up time should go down to 10 seconds and it'll be as stable as a rock.
Price wise, there are some excellent laptop deals out there for the same price as Replicator. At least we know that most of our VSTi's will work in WinXP/OSX. And a lot of companies allow multiple licensing for PC and laptop so you don't have to buy the same software twice.
I like the idea of an internet/LAN connection on my laptop for sharing music and jamming. That's where music is heading so I think laptops are essential for live music nowdays. Not so sure about Replicator.

What's this replicator you speak of?
Could it be receptor, or something else?

Thats the good point about this unit...no mouse, monitor, or keyboard required...hell just sit it on the desk with your laptop on top of it and away you go...lots of extra power added to the power of your laptop.munchkin wrote:I like the idea of just flipping open a laptop, starting up Live 4 and playing my songs.
