donate the rest to Smex
Yeah... I recant my original posting.
I'd drop the Neuropack for Smex... the collectve rules and deserves some $$$.

I finally figured out that Smex means "SmartElectronix".

And here I was ready to go ballistic for some amazing developer I'd never heard of.

Instead, I'm reminded that this is an amazing collective of developers and I've not only heard of, but use extensively. :D

hmmm... that gives me an idea...
"Music is directly tied to the technology of a culture."
"Modular gear is the craft beer of music."

I'd go:
Tracktion
all the free stuff already mentioned +
ugo's synths
all the free drumkits on Akai's site

Save the $20 for a down-payment on either a cheapie mixer for guitar/bass/vocal input, or EVE, depending on what kind of music I was going to make.

My copy of Cubasis CE (Creative Edition) was such a crash happy piece of shit that I reckon it set me back a hell of a long way before I started to understand making music on my computer. That experience has taught me to be wary of OEM software with no access to updates to fix bugs etc (in fact, no access to upgrades either... :? ).

This question is essentially the position I was in a few months ago (still am.)

I bought FL Studio (149 us here) and CM magazine

now I use
CM stuff
Ugo
Odo
Classics
Smex

there are so many great freebies, but that is another thread.

I love the stuff!
..what goes around comes around..
