Thanks for clarifying, I felt like it was producing some additional saturation/harmonic distortion - but I didn't use it a lot. It's just a resonance filter, then? Damn placebo-effect! :-D

Yeah just a narrow Q boost. He even explains that on the bod page.. I mean I guess it's handy to have it in a simply plugin but that's all it is.

I've got Rbass when they gave it away as a freebie.
I use it sometimes on some soundfx-s, but never use it on music...

I think, MBassador is the better tool.

Then there's of course BBE sonic maximizer, nowdays three plugin set. It used to be just few bucks for some time ago in Don't Crack.

Shape the input and the harmonics via the internal high- and lowpass - then switch to parallel-mode.

its actually a resonant high pass filter.

as far as Free Mac plugins Bark of the dog is the only freeware that does this

its a one trick pony that works
its is just quicker and more convenient.

its got a "mix" knob..which most EQ don't have (unless u make a send track)
and an additionnal "trim" fader

it just saves time

but i do prefer Waves' Maxxbass or Lo-Air or PSP's Mixbass (none of them are free)

a few Months(..or was it a year ?) ago Waves gave out RBass for free(facebook thinggy)

however Surfer EQ is kinda awesome doing this. u can have a eq band follow the pitch of a bass track
..instead of a static Bass boost

I am looking for a plugin like RBass or MaxxBass. Do you have any advice?

Yay :hyper:
Why not just buy RBass and/or MaxxBass? They're always on sale somewhere.

Unless you're trying to avoid Waves...

I've got some great result with the Waves Low Air - I think that's better in many cases than RBass or MaxxBass which I also own.

Sonic Sweet has Mach3 sub-bass generator - but I consider the Low Air better for this purpose.

Not sure how 2016 works, but back in the day, I tried desperately to reproduce the "rbass" sounds, much misery ensued, especially considering that you can get it (at least used) at a great price.

Bark of Dog was this joke plug-in to bash Voice of God from UAD.
Any plug-in to make a resonant hp filter can do this thing. This was the joke :ud:

Airwindows FathomFive, free.
Has replaced RBass for me, you have to dial back the mix knob a lot though.

perhaps but it still does something u cannot do with an EQ (mix)

Or, understand that the plug is unique and quit trying to belittle people who know better (who f....ing cares about some bark/dog nonsense)

You can do it free with a little plumbing. Basically, MaxxBass generates second-order harmonics from the bass fundamental that are filtered, compressed and mixed with the source. You need to dedicate an Aux channel in the DAW to set up a DIY MaxxBass and take more care with the settings.

Basically, the ordering is:
Low-pass filter the incoming signal to capture the fundamental
Generate second-order harmonics - a Chebyshev wave shaper will do the job. Ideally you want second-order harmonics but you can get away with more conventional third-order harmonics because you will...
Filter the output to prevent the harmonics appearing too far up the spectrum
And compress it.

Waves in this paper (http://www.maxx.com/objects/PDF/Bass_Ex ... arison.pdf - intended to demonstrate why it's better than TruBass) shows you want to compress the harmonics and boost the output: so that the setup is still generating harmonics when the bass subsides. You may want to compress the signal on the way in instead - a lot depends on how you handle the waveshaping.

I don't know about RBass specifically (I don't know exactly how different it is to Maxx) but I compared FathomFive to MaxxBass and I couldn't get the punch of MaxxBass with it at all. It's still a great plugin though.
