I tend to hate R&B/Urban whatever you call it with a passion, but every track from the past couple of years that I have liked has turned out to be a Neptunes production or remix. Then I bought their Attack of the Clones CD - what a pile of shit, I took it back and got a refund. Much better as NERD than the Neptunes in my opinion.

when i see a record labelled as "PunkMetalGospelSoul" i don't even bother to listen : when i see "metal" i at least know a bit what to expect -
where does the need to label everything which is minusculy deviating from something else a new name come from ?

I know what you're saying but my point is that people are coming up with new names and genres for things that are minor variations - really silly stuff like using more of a certain instrument or more rapping or singing, or even a different beat form. This is just crazy and I still think it's generally an artificial way to make someone seem "new" when they have little else to really contribute.

And some of my own...from a tune in progress with my friends punk hop act. It takes on the fact that the industry likes to label people often forcing round pegs into square holes. I had to post this after reading that story about the HMV and Squarepusher album.

Black Avril
words by Lady J
music by Lady J and Boxcutter

Chorus:
No, I'm not the "Black Avril"
Yes, I write my own songs.
They may not have mass appeal.
Don't tell me where I belong.

Its all about the vibe, inside we bring
Been 2 years doin' this punk hop thang.
I don't wanna sit in front da screen
Watchin them wave around their bling bling.

Like Prince long said, 'Get the Funk Up'
I rock da beat to make ya'll jump up.
Watchin da industry raise its eyebrow
We been off da hook and off the radar up til now.

It's not time tested, we're not invested
In a system erected by the well rested.
Not to be accepted just to be injested
As a disposable product to be bested.

Chorus
No, I'm not the "Black Avril"
Yes, I write my own songs.
If music has become so unreal.
Feel free to join in and sing along.

It's an unreal world of fake 'reality'
What's real to them is only on TV.
What has not yet blown is not worth a thing.
You don't even have to be able to sing.

Just wail off a whole long string of notes
Pretend you're aretha and hope no one takes note
And sit back and collect the votes
Like Pavlov's dog, networks take note.

We have no celebrity skin nor plastic surgery glow
We threaten them by not accepting the status quo
They're scared of us just like we've got a gun
I'm just the girl of cinnamon with the brown sugar tongue.

They dun asked the same question every day.
"What are you tryin to do, who ya tryin to be?"
I ain't no one else but me.
Don't like that then you'll never see.

Bridge:
Never see the soul behind loud guitars
Never hear the music cause it isn't yours
Never feel the bass as you come undone
Never smell da sweat then ya never have the fun.

Chorus 2x
No, I'm not the "Black Avril"
Yes, I write my own songs.
They may not have mass appeal.
Don't tell me where I belong.
No, I'm not the "Black Avril"
Yes, I write my own songs.
If music has become so unreal.
Feel free to join in and sing along.

what makes you think Punk Hop is minusculy deviating from something else.

It is neither straight up punk or mainstream Hip Hop but a combination of the better underground elements of both.

If i asked someone to describe their music, and they said 'Punk-Hop', id laugh my arse off

it's only hip hop with real instruments instead of turntables really.

All you need then is people who can actually sing and you have an act worth listening too :-o

I'm still waiting for Shed to take off.

It's like house and garage but a bit more out there.
