FM mod behaviour

Hi, the only issue i have is how the FM works. So let's say there's only OSC1 turned on with a simple sine wave, right. Now i wanna modulate it with another sine wave so i turn on the mod1 and switch modulation type to "F". Yes, we now hear modulated signal. But now if i want to hear less of this modulation and therefore i turn down the volume of the mod1, it actually turns down the volume of the whole signal (0 = silence). That is not how it should work AFAIK. It shouldn't affect volume of the OSC1, it should affect amount of the FM, right? I just wanna make sure i'm not missing something, so i'll appreciate any comment on that.

I get totally confused when i try to use that section of Synthmaster. I can never be sure if the various controls are operating on a modulator (and which modulator?) or the main signal (I guess you can call that the carrier). The manual doesn't really make it clear, and FM or PM is so nonintuitive anyway that I give up in despair when I try to figure it all out.

Sorry I can't help. I wish the manual covered this in depth.
