Of course, I should point out that I love Floyd with the sole exception of this one album.

Maybe the studio LP, I think the live tracks were much better then the studio versions.MArmstrong wrote:Am I the only one who thinks Ummagumma is basically self indulgent garbage with only a few highlights to save it from being a complete waste of space (sorry should point out that I quite like the live disc)????let the flaming begin!!!!!

I'll second Squids here...
Obscured by Clouds is my favourite early Pink Floyd. However, my knowledge of early Pink Floyd is sketchy at best. I'm very well versed in Dark Side of the Moon onwards however
My experience of the early stuff is built upon repeated listenings of "Relics" and my old man's copy of Obscured by Clouds (oh, and the "Echoes" best of...I bought that when I started learning guitar this year and had the songbook but not the CD
Hasn't helped me much though - I still suck at pretending to be David Gimour
).

I'm a long, long-time Floyd fan from Syd to Floyd-minus-Waters, so it's hard for me to judge. I have favorites - "Bike", "See Emily Play", "Summer '68", "Set the Controls...", the list just goes on and on. I think the best album they ever did was "Wish You Were Here" and that was a sorrowful tribute to Syd. For a long time I was adamant that "Dark Side.." was the best Floyd album, but a good friend kept telling me to give "Wish.." a good critical listen - that it was better - and he won out.
One track I would dearly love to find and I can't - while travelling across nothern Florida very late at night to see Utopia at Florida State, I got to hear the live version of "Echoes" on the radio. Of course I had heard the studio version what with "Meddle" being the album cover I always used for "hash under glass" and for ahem "cleaning leafy substances" (I still have the album btw...sadly, no hash...), but the live version just blew me away. Can anyone tell me which album it came from? "Live at Pompeii" maybe?
Needless to say, I want that track badly.

My favorite is piper! So good. I think syd is only on half of saucer and the band wasn't too sure what their singing should sound like when then gave him the boot so the other half is actually not syd singing but one of the other guys singing but trying to sound like syd.
The several species... song on umaguma is a classic, talk about the time they must have spend splicing tape on that one
It's like house but with animals.
I just saw a dvd about dark side, it was great (if your a fan) they showed them in the studio and took time to explain the tape splicing and even how to program the synth (ems?) good stuff.

I don't know. Pink Floyd were quite unique I think in the way that they played a lot of (yet) unreleased songs during concerts. I have bootleg LP from 1972 with a version of DSOTM a year before it was released. It's amazing. One track I would dearly love to find and I can't - while travelling across nothern Florida very late at night to see Utopia at Florida State, I got to hear the live version of "Echoes" on the radio. But they did this all the time. I listen a lot (as the progger I am) to an internet radiostation dedicated to prog and they play sometimes the most amazing live Pink Floyd bootlegs.
Dogs from Animals was once called Raving and Drooling and they played it already during the Meddle tours. And it was in fact much better then the final studio version.
The same station played a few weeks ago a pre Meddle live recording. Astounding recording quality.
And most of Meddle was there, but sometimes very different.
I realy wish for a bootleg CD project whe have had for Tangerine Dream (Two boxes, 14 CD's in total).

It's probably from one of these...gnu23 wrote:I'm a long, long-time Floyd fan from Syd to Floyd-minus-Waters, so it's hard for me to judge. I should add that "Wish you were here" and "Dark Side ..." are my two favorites. In fact upto and including "Final Cut" I like all of 'em.
Ummagumma .. Love the live stuff, the studio part is not too good. And I also really like "Obscured by Clouds" and "More"

When I was in London last I took a picture of what I think is the factory in the Animals cover. I'll post the pick so maybe some of you Londoners can verify?

That's Battersea Power Station.
I love "Animals" and "The Final Cut". I think Floyd were better after Barret left the group.
Hats off to Syd though - Madcap Laughs is a great album.

Don't know if it was the one you heard, but the live version of Echoes on Live at Pompeii is wonderful.gnu23 wrote: One track I would dearly love to find and I can't - while travelling across nothern Florida very late at night to see Utopia at Florida State, I got to hear the live version of "Echoes" on the radio.
