Just found these crusher videos on my youtube - more on the hardcore experimental side of things:

Okay, I didn't have to listen to much.Sampleconstruct wrote:You would be surprised how many synths and effects I don't own, haven't bought a synth in ages, I stick to my favorite tools for long/ever and only buy new things if something really interests me or a dev gives me an NFR and invites me to a Beta team.wagtunes wrote:I assume you own it (what don't you own? LOL) and maybe have something either on YouTube or Soundcloud I could listen to?Sampleconstruct wrote:Totally, and it provides grain length times between 1 ms and 60 seconds which is unique. Each parameter has a dedicated LFO with plenty of shapes and you can draw your own shapes too, even for the grain shape which is awesome. And it provides up to 100 parallel grain streams (from the top of my head) if your CPU can handle it.wagtunes wrote:Simon, can it create very complex soundscapes that morph continuously over time?Sampleconstruct wrote:Oh, it does pretty sounds alright and everything else. You can either use it as an effect to process external audio or load a wav file and play it via MIDI, and/or use the internal synth oscillator - it is the most complete granulator out there, but it doesn't come with onboard FX, just some more basic filters.SODDI wrote:Crusher-X - but I do not know how the current VSTi version works. I only worked on it in standalone. It is oriented to avant-garde synthesis and performance.
It is not designed to make pretty sounds.
Here are some crusher tracks I made years ago, meanwhile the plug-in has evolved even more.

Wow...just wow. That is some spooky stuff there.
Okay, it's on my list of synths to check out. Thank you very much for this. It's really appreciated.
Damn...how did I freaking miss this?

So, live on video - using crusher-X as a wav file player in this video, loading a processed cello texture, playing the pitches via Midi, tweaking crusher-X on the fly. The impro has it's lengthy parts but some parts are pretty cool I think - some Pro-R reverb was applied for more listening fun.

Why are ppl suggesting Retrologue is granular ? It's just a VA isnt it ?
Padshop was the granular one.
Padshop was the granular one.

At the risk of sounding old, that is just super peachy neato keen.Sampleconstruct wrote:So, live on video - using crusher-X as a wav file player in this video, loading a processed cello texture, playing the pitches via Midi, tweaking crusher-X on the fly. I see a purchase in my future.

Well, needless to say, I am beyond extremely disappointed. I downloaded the Crusher-X 5 Studio demo just to make sure it worked. I was all ready to buy this.
First thing I discovered was that Cubase 7 does not recognize it as a VSTi, just an FX. That's fine. I'm okay with using it in that manner. So I go to my VST, go to Inserts, find Crusherxdemo, and insert it as an FX. Nothing happens. No GUI pops up like normal when I insert an FX. I hit a few keys. I could hear that it definitely loaded because the sound of the VSTi, which was just a default saw wave, was most certainly mangled just off the default setting. But no GUI. Then I tried to do something else in Cubase and nothing worked. It was frozen solid.
In short, I can't get this to work in Cubase 7. End of story.
I can't even begin to tell you how disappointed I am. I've watched a number of tutorial demos this morning and this is the most amazing granular FX processor out there hands down. It better be at 179 euro. But it simply doesn't work.
If anybody has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Get a system that isnt as incessantly fragile, fussy and problematic as you are repeatedly reporting yours to be.wagtunes wrote:If anybody has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

The dev has his own forum here on KVR, a question doesn't cost anything, so here it is:wagtunes wrote:Disappointed...

Well, let's see now. I have almost 100 working VSTi's and hundreds of working FX. This is the first 64 bit application (all my problems are bridging 32 bit apps) that hasn't worked. Think maybe it just may be that it doesn't work with Cubase 7?whyterabbyt wrote:Get a system that isnt as incessantly fragile, fussy and problematic as you are repeatedly reporting yours to be.wagtunes wrote:If anybody has any suggestions, I'm all ears.
I missed you. It's been a good year at least since I said anything that prompted you to rag on me. It's so good to see you're still around and watching out for me.
Have a nice day.
PS - If somebody gives me the money for a new system and then reinstalls all my plugs for me, I'll be happy to do it.

Ichecked, and Wagtunes is right.
I tried to install in Program Files, but that did not work. Trying to install again, the option was to repair. This installs and the 32 bit and the 64 bit in Program Files x86 Steinverg/Vst
As I don't ever use 32bit vst, I had to add the path.
It loaded as an effect. When I added an instrument track (Chromaphone) and tried to add CrusherX 64 as an effect, Cubase 8.5 froze.
Trying CtrlAltDel to get out, my entire pc froze. Had to restart.
Tried twice.

I have been interested in CrusherX for a long time, but never downloaded a demo. Good I did.
Disappointing.

Thank you. So it's not my "system" as somebody here wanted to blame it on.ErikH wrote:Ichecked, and Wagtunes is right.

FWIW, I tested it in MuLab and it works flawlessly.
One day, I am going to bite the bullet and buy MuLab (I have the demo) and start doing everything there. Cubase has been a pain ever since I got it and that was on a brand new system with nothing else on it.
Time to start thinking about a new DAW.

Absynth.Dasheesh wrote:Welp, this will be like the third time I've commented on this, but there is a whole lot of confusion regarding what granular is on this forum. There are different types of granular. A granular filter is basically an effect. It almost always uses a sample as an oscillator, then feeds it through a granulating algorithm (a grain filter). Grainular synthesis is a grain oscillator. There are very few examples of this in history. Maybe three or four attempts I can think of. Csound, maxMSP, I think there was a tone2 one that used a grain oscillator, and then there was Nuclear. The rest, as far as I'm aware are grain filtering affects, including camel.

Not trying to get you change your mind, but why not Reaper, rather than MuLab? Not saying that MuLab is a bad DAW, but Reaper is the most stable and CPU efficient DAW I have ever used.wagtunes wrote:Thank you.
