MVocoder Sidechain not working in Ableton Live

Hi,

I've used MVocoder in previous projects so I thought I know how to set it up in Ableton Live. So I've set it up as I was used to: insert a MIDI Instrument Channel, put an instrument on it and put MVocoder in this channel. Then I went to an audio track which should be the modulator and set the track output to the channel of the instrument and the sidechain input of MVocoder there.

As soon as I play the instrument, I hear the sound of the instrument. As soon as I start playing back audio, nothing changes, the instrument is still playing, no modulation.

So I went back to an old project and the actual MVocoder isn't also working there any more.

I've checked it with the Youtube tutorial videos. There's talked about a sidechain button, but this button isn't there. I'm using version MVocoder 9.12 on Ableton Live 9.2.3

What am I doing wrong? Or is this a bug?

Just tested in Ableton, works fine for me. Can you please copy (bottom right corner) your settings from MVocoder and paste them here so I can look at it for you. Also, its a good idea to update to the latest version, there have been some quality improvements with the formant.

I should also mention, that you are not doing anything wrong. That is indeed the correct way to set it up in Ableton.
Also there is no sidechain button to my knowledge.
Maybe check the mode in MVocoder, is it set to morph?

Just tried it with the default preset. Mode is vocoder. Updated now to 10.04. Same thing here.

You have set it up exactly right. I have watched the video lots and in lots of detail and cant find what is causing this.
Please can you send me the copy/paste settings (bottom right of the plugin) and also if possible an Ableton set. I will get to the bottom of this for you.

I've tried to copy the settings, but it didn't work. I can copy it, but as soon as I paste the string it gets truncated after saving...

Don't use quick reply. When using the full text editor at the top of the text input box there is button that says "code". use this and paste the text between the brackets. I will take a look at your live set now.

Unfortunately your live set doesn't use the VST of MVocoder, so I had to insert my own instance and it worked perfectly. This tells me that it has nothing to do with Live or your routing.
Also I noticed in your video that the synth sound changes when the vocoder in inserted. It sounds like it doing LR encoding or something.

I really need those copy paste settings so I can continue.
Some things for you to try:
Cycle through some presets, do they all sound the same?
Check the LR encoding button, try toggling on and off, any change to the sound?

I didn't use quick reply, I'm using the "big" editor. And I'm using the code shortcode. But as soon as I save it, the code gets truncated. I'll try it again, you see the result below...
I'm on a Mac, so I'm using not VST, but the AU plugin!!!

Ok and this seems to be the problem! I've tried the VST version now and this works as expected. So it seems to be a AU problem!

I can't help you any more, as I am unable to test the AU version of the plugin, I'm on windows. I can only test VST and that works for you.
It definitely looks like a bug with the AU version. Vojtech should pick it up from here.......

I didn't read the whole conversation here, but I assume you are talking about AU in Live not receiving sidechain. So again, for the millionth time , sadly, it's a bug in Live. Live basically doesn't support any plugin interface properly, it completely ignores the busses it reports and just offers "at most 8 input channels", which is ridiculous, since 7.1 is 8 channels, so our plugins, being surround capable cannot receive a sidechain in there. So the solution is simple - use VST, which reports 2/4in2out by default, unless you activate surround. It's like that to make it all work with problematic hosts such as Live.

I didn't know about the bug and didn't read about it here, so I'm sorry if I offended you.
Is there any technical or more detailed explanation on this topic here in the forum?
As far as I understand in your plugins channel 1-8 is reserved for surround, Live can send a max. of 8 inputs to a plugin, so there's no space any more to get into channel 9/10 which would be needed for sidechaining?

This would be an interesting point, because I'm planning to do surround productions, but not 7.1, but 9.1!
