How does modulator automation Read and Write work?

Something I wanted to ask for a long while,
What is the purpose of the automation Read and Write buttons in modulators and how do I use them?
I can only get them to have one value, which would mean it's essentially the same as Restore original values when disabled, which would be redundant.

With [W] enabled and playback in your host, you can write the modulator values into an automation envelope. You could then edit them there and set the Modulator to read them back in, overriding the defined modulator, by clicking the [R] button.

Or, you could just create your own automation envelope for the parameter (Modula-LFOn-AutomaValue) and Read that in.

I tried it again and it works now. Not sure what I did previously that made it not work.
