Have a go with the MS1 filter, and turn the little trimpot near the res knob up to 200% (edit: and the res knob up to full). The analog will have more noise and have the edge in terms of tone, but The Drop has the best filter models available in any filter plugin available.
It's Paul Perry's Frostwave Resonator so I'm not really sure which revision he used, I know the Drop is the best Andy and I said so in this very thread but there is something with digital when you go over the top with resonance and also overdrive that is just not quite the same as in analogue imo, but i find it's the same with all Vst's.

Edit; Ok that trimpot Andy, hello screaming analogue filth! That is just awesome work man and I have to eat my own hat right away, this is just on another level yet again, great work.

2nd Edit; Ohh yes :D
Glad you like it! The Frostwave resonator is a mk2 filter, so to emulate that sound you should use the MS2 filter in The Drop, hopefully they should be pretty close given the limits of keeping things cpu friendly. I find the MS1 nastier as it has more distortion in the main signal path, and the growl from the biased unbalanced transistors is also a bit angrier :)

edit: But both the MS20 filters sound kinda polite when you compare them to the WSP, please give that a go as well!

No worries! I'm not sure how to make it more obvious than that, but I do understand just clicking ok to get rid of annoying boxes, I do it too!

I am rinsing Diva through the wasp filter right now with my jaw on the floor sir :) It's not many time's a Vst has had the hair on my arms raising but the Wasp filter does that in spades :tu:
"People are stupid" Gegard Mousasi.

I was just trying out the Wasp on a few different sources as well. Good fun with Omnisphere, especailly with the analog synth sounds from Trilian. The Drop just might be a great companion to Omni/Trilian, since it's filters are not great when it comes to squelchy analog behavior.

So now that you've made Ableton way better by putting your filters in Operator and the other instruments, how about offering your services to Spectrasonics? They need some help in the filter department...

Post

Either I'm living in a parallel universe where computers are living breathing analogue monsters or this VST is incredible.
Thank you for this update Andy its just perfect, I'm still hoping you turn your skills to a synth one day.

Post

I'd be interested to see a synth as well. You certainly have the filters covered. But people never talk about the oscillators of synths for some reason (unless it's wavetable or something fancy), it's always all about the filters when it comes to analog. But VAs sound so vastly different from each other just using the oscillators, without any filtering at all. Especially when you stack 2 or 3 together, all VAs seem to respond very differently. so I'm curious what your oscs would sound like.

Post

Andy did the oscillators for Synth Squad, correct me if i'm wrong?

Is the "analogness" of emulated oscillators judged from their level of aliasing and their response when modulated, rather than their being any magic to the generation of the waveforms?

Post

Very happy with how this sound came out:
MP3: http://www.elanhickler.com/_/the_drop_squelchy.mp3
WAV: elanhickler.com/_/the_drop_squelchy.wav (disable auto-play)

(REAPER crashed and I lost the patch, oops)

Using PRD filter, high res, some drive, modulating with LFO2 and making use of asym/curve knobs. This is close to the sound of the Thomas White Buchla LPG [Lowpass Gate / LoPass / Low Pass] (filter only w/resonance). Oh also I compressed the living s*** out of this, brings out the bass and resonance a bit more.

I'm attempting to get a vactrol response with the asym/curve knobs. It's pretty good, but LFO2 was not made to open and close like a vactrol so it's difficult to get the perfect settings for this kind of sound. But The Drop is great nonetheless!

Here's the TH Buchla LPG sound I was trying to recreate:
http://www.elanhickler.com/_/thomas_whi ... ippets.mp3

KSM might actually have a resonance characteristic closer to that of the TH LPG. If you could increase the resonance past 200% I'm sure the KSM resonance would become more square and sound very close to the thomas white LPG at max resonance/screaminess. Add a "vactrol mode" to the filter modulation and it will get even closer.

This is not a feature request, just an explanation of what might get closer to the sound I was trying to recreate.

Microtonic + Ohmicide for percussion. KSM filter. Messed with pitch and rate after recording just to hear a few different "perspectives".

LP Drive led seems to be stuck on red when MS1 is selected.

You're in an amazing state - so stay there.

Thanks for spotting that, I need to adjust the levels now there is a DC offset in the signal path that wasn't there before - this will be clipping the drive indicator, easy fixed with the next update :tu:

I've started a new product thread about "The Scream", a distortion stomp box plugin. If anyone wants to provide feedback or is interested in discussing TS-808 mods they would like included then please post here:
