But I will not jump on it at that price.
Yep, Bitwig's marketing have got it the wrong way round (and I can think of other audio devs with the same problem). They're playing catch-up with the big boys, so they need to be more competitive. Keep the retail price where it is and have more regular major upgrades for $99 every 15-24 months.

Imagine how amazingly positive this v2 release could have been. Huge missed opportunity to get new customers onboard...rather than lose some.

For a closer comparison, the annual update plan for a perpetual PT licence is $99, so Bitwig is more expensive than PT. The $299 is for a subscription where you don't already have a perpetual PT licence (that now costs $600). It's also, coincidentally, $299 to 'reinstate' a perpetual licence if you fail to renew the annual plan and at some point want to get back in.
Wow, you are correct. I didn't read that far into their pricing details.

Bitwig! Are you sure you didn't mean $69 per year? Or even $99?

But the big difference is you have to keep up that PT subscription. If you stop then its $299... I really wouldn't want that, would you?
You could fall out of the licence because you dont have the money or maybe you just had a break from using it and then its a massive $299 to get back in, no thanks.

Bitwig you will be free to stop and start with no sting in the tail. If no new features arrive then dont bother to upgrade. Even just a 6 month subscription break will save you money. Its really not a terrible way to do it.

Exactly, have a look at the DAW section on GearSlutz: https://www.gearslutz.com/board/daw-talk/

First of all Bitwig doesn't have a sub-section.

Secondly go to the "Other DAWs subsection": https://www.gearslutz.com/board/other-daws/

There is a recent post about Bitwig 2 with absolutely no replies at this time.

So I am guessing that there is probably a fairly small user base, Bitwig have also spent a lot of time, effort and money since release on version 1 basically bug fixing and adding a few features. They have had no income from existing users during this time, only from new users.

There is a poll on this site here which at this moment is roughly split by thirds, so a third think the new model is ok, these guys are all going to upgrade. Another third have their doubts so maybe 50% will upgrade and another third are not going to upgrade.

So lets take the middle ground and say 50% of users will upgrade and then carry on paying the yearly support cost. So in the old model if Bitwig are only releasing a paid upgrade every 3 years then they are better off with the new model (3 years upgrade cost for 50% existing users = 150%), but then now have less users and if they don't keep up with actually adding good new features rather than fire-fighting they will loose users gradually.

I think it is a risky gamble myself.

I am an existing user who keeps Bitwig around as a secondary DAW. For me this model is extremely unattractive (not necessarily the model but rather the price point). If there would be a major version upgrade with a promotional upgrade period, I would do it. But why should I upgrade if I have no real incentive to do so? For 99$ I would probably do it as a convenience, but 169$ is a bit too high for that purpose.

I Agree, I won't be upgrading either.

Then , i will get back on Live, for both composition and gig.
I will see how Bitwig will manage this "new" (not really, but...) model of license.
i will certainly get back to Bitwig when it will be reliable on Gig, for now it's not. and they know this midi-connection bug ,i will not send back another ticket .

As i don't know when it will be done, i don't get back on it and pay a new subscription until i could be shure to use Bitwig fully.

Even if i love Bitwig and as it's not a priority for me ,the new style of license doesn't bother me . But i can understand the questioning of people who decided to work exclusively with it.
I hope the community will not flee to mutch.

I wonder if anyone here would be happier if it was 2 years of updates rather than 1?
