What a luck!
I bought my first daw bitwig for $199 for their thanksgiving sale. Now I have to pay $169 for the upgrade so i am paying $368 for 2.0 version( as opposed to $299) . So how exactly is this a "sale" when I am actually having to pay more money. Nice thanks they gave for thanksgiving

I don't mind paying but I feel this company is dishonest and slimy and doesn't deserve my money.
but the price for 2.0 will not be $299, which is the actual 1.3.15 price. it will be more like $399. i am sure they even calculated the $169 for one good reason (which i will not explain here)^^.

One their website it says buy it now for $299 and get 2.0 upgrade for free. So 2.0 is $299 if you buy now which is what my comment was based on. Am i reading it wrong?

What is the 'good reason' and why dec 10? Surely it is to bilk more money from ppl like me who took their "thanks" on thanksgiving. I regret browbeating bunch of my friends who are also just starting in music production into buying bitwig . What a horrible/dishonest company .

mmm.. I wouldn't compare it to the standard version of Ableton. some of Bitwig's native devices are similar to ableton's max for live essential devices that comes with the suite. (a bit different but yeah) the LFO, poli, xy... etc.. and the suite is around $600-$700 isn't it.
Yep bitwig has more modulations then ableton standard , but can't be compared to suite .

Bitwig : a simple 4 op. F.M . synth ( sines only )
a Simple sampler
a 2 osc synth ( probably majority of code comes from surge vst) , no real sync etc ..
Bitwig is a joke in the synth department ..kick.snare.hat; organ .. C'mon

Ableton ...simpler/sampler / operator kills all of the above ( including fantastic filters by cytomic )
Eyeball exchanging
Soul calibrating ..frequencies

With all the software I'm using I have noticed that some versions are more stable than others. The 12-months system will have me save versions that I'm finding stable and fast to work in and when my 12-moth cycle has ended I will roll back to the most stable version of my previous year and stay with it - being productive - until a new feature that I "can't live without" comes around and then I'll pay again to get into the loop for another 12 months.

Yes, you are right that this policy will create a user community of ppl at different versions. That's gonna be good for people like me, because forum discussions will help us to decide which old versions that might fit our particular needs for optimal stability and productivity, and when it makes sense to jump into a new 12-months cycle.

If you just bought BW at Thanksgiving there isn't a good reason to upgrade yet. I spent a lot on end-of-year sales of new VSTs and other toys, and I don't need the new features right now. So I will wait a few months until 2.x.x which will likely be more stable anyway. I might even get a few extra features, and who knows? They might even offer a sale price at some point.

Not really. I know people who still use Reason v2.5 :hihi:

And why now? I'd be totally happy with it. Besides Reason is cheaper to upgrade, it has had some nice features with every major update that are easily worth the money if you really feel you need them. But like I said. If you don't, you can manage with old Reason for a very long time.

And pay 159€ to receive it. Too big feature to release when people asked for it :hihi:

I feel they did this all wrong. Now they are just losing people left and right. its a shame. 2.0 Should be honored to everyone. And then start the license model. I do not mind supporting something to be ongoing. I mean if they are actually going to fix bugs and introduce new things very very often. And not just once a year or two. Hopefully they reconsider their plans.

I think the underlying issue here is that they simply priced the upgrade too high. They are a small niche company in a small but crowded market, and they need to increase the revenue stream. But Bitwig does not have the market clout of Ableton. At a $99 upgrade price, there might be always be some grumbling, but 90% of the installed user base would quickly roll forward. But at $169, the buying question changes: what other products could I buy that would make my music better? Another soft synth? A dedicated effect VST that might do better than the built-ins? More hardware? As the price goes up, the number of products competing for my money increases, some of which might do more for my musical creativity and results. In the end these are just tools to make music, and there are more choices every day.

Amen. But at the end of the day, once the commotion is over, if it's the DAW we want to use, we're going to pay the money and use it. Most of us anyway.

Just chiming in on this. You know what's a great "subscription" model?
ReNoise, you buy v3.7 you get upgrades to 4.7. This of course relies on the honesty of the developers, but isn't at all rigged into a time based model, because let's face flat facts, no software company ever has or ever will complete all planned upgrades on a time scale that customers expect. This model also allows for the software developer to 'speed up' or slow down development on their own schedule, not beholden to upgrade schedules. It also allows for a customer that just bought v1.3 a month ago etc. to get updates until v2.3.

What isn't as pretty for the end user is to think that yearly they should buy the upgrade version, no matter how little or how much improvements have been made.

I buy v2.0 now and in six months they put in the proposed modular tools and Web collaboration features I'm not at all upset if all I get is bug fix updates and it's only 10 months before they release 3.0. Or conversely it takes them longer to do what they said 1 1/2 years say, then finally release 3.0 I'm still OK with that. I buy v2.0 now and it takes them longer than a year to integrate those features they mentioned for 2.0 years and years ago and I'm livid.

This is why subscription models of any kind suck, tracking down "bug free on your system" versions also becomes an issue.
