I have seen such a discussion over an update only once - when Steinberg f***ed their Cubase SX 3 users, left them with buggy software (after they at least once announced a bug-fix update) and said the next update would be a major paid update.
(ok, with NI there are also some discussions around quality and paid upgrades... )
Bitwig was in a much better situation here IMHO - version 1 was ok, steady updates .... v2 principly looks interesting and promising.
Did they just think - ok, what would be a good new license approach for them or did they somehow thought about their users? As others pointed out this concept makes Bitwig the most expensive software out there - the ratio of cost for new product and keeping it up-to-date seems challenging at least (and saying you can renew after more than 12 months IMHO is an excuse but not a concept).
Would be really interested in how they came up with those numbers (prices) .... market research? target group definition?
After the SX3 move of Steinberg (having had used Cubase since the first versions of VST on PPC) it seemed clear to me that this was not they way I wanted to be treated ....
I also used Protools for 2-3 years before they changed to subscription and it seemed clear to me, that I am not within their target group so I dropped Protools.
So, at least in my limited knowledge about the music software market I would say that both Digidesign/Avid and Steinberg had clear market shares and a long history at those points.
For Bitwig, within that market and the current economic situation .... interesting move - would be interesting to get to know the marketing concept behind this.

Soo many people seem intent on stating their opinions as facts, and are even prepared to go to war over it. Oh how I dream of a non-violent internet... If we, as a species, could evolve to express our feelings without offending anyone, and if we could learn to understand another's feelings without feeling a need to judge and confront them, I think we might have a chance to make this world a better place.
As it is now, this thread seems to have derailed into a confrontation of the ego's, a battle of titans over who's RIGHT and who's WRONG. All this anger only serves to create stress. Meanwhile we could have a constructive conversation and who knows, Dom might see that his move did not sit well with his community. As it is now, I doubt he's still subscribed to this thread.
While I agree with you on many fronts, the situation got out of hand because Dom has vanished. There are too many legit concerns that he would not be able to answer satisfactory, so the team chose to ignore the client base after dropping the bomb, and keep their heads low till the storm has passed.
Bitwig 1 licenses have lost all of their value and all early supporters are trapped and can't opt out even if they wanted too so this is a sort of extortion.. You either upgrade and give some value to your license or you are fried you can't sell it. Meanwhile bitwig became the most expensive daw in the market without providing anything sort of value update wise for the past 2 years, they witheld day 1 feats like crossfades and intentionally crippled the daw to force updates, countless people bought on the discount period close to dec 10 and fell into a nice and well thought out trap, I mean the list goes on..
If you pay attention to other media you will see that the entire community is raging beyond belief. I have never expected such shady practises from this team to be honest, they didn't seem that dubious in the start.

It's very simple....the market will show if it was the right way.
If not Bitwig might have no future.
If yes Bitwig gets more money for research and new features etc.
As a possible customer for the full blown version (just use the 8-track) i will wait another 1-2 years how things goes.

I would have no problem with it maybe as long as i still could get support if needed and bug fixes after the 12 months....if not it would be a no-go for me yet.
But everyone to his/her likings of course.
For sure it will be in general harder for developers to get a fluid income and find the perfect way to grow.

I guess they want to discuss things internally first, and hopefully they will come up with something that will be more acceptable to the user base. So I would say give them some more time.sisarii wrote:While I agree with you on many fronts, the situation got out of hand because Dom has vanished. Same here. I sent them a reminder and they responded in an understanding way saying that I should get in touch when 2.0 comes out and they'll sort something out. So I'll wait and see if we manage to resolve this nicelyGranum wrote:Before I purchased Bitwig in 2014 I emailed their support asking about upgrade pricing and received the email below in response. I purchased a license with this in mind. I think that customers who were lied to have a right to be upset, and that companies who lie to customers should be held a accountable.
We release bug fixes and minor updates for free. A bigger upgrade, such as a next Bitwig Studio 2.0 version will be a paid upgrade.
I can't tell you the upgrade prices yet. This will depend on the feature set of the next version. However, we will make sure to offer reasonable upgrade pricing to customers that purchased the 1.0 version of Bitwig Studio.
Best regards,
I have no issues with the model itself, only the prices. I paid 209 EUR for 1.0, and now I'd have to pay 159 for the upgrade? Isn't that ludicrous? I'd happily pay 99, it's not about that. I just feel lied to.
