This is an interesting and valid point. I think Cuabse SX would need a pretty major overhaul or major new environment within it to lure Live 4 users or prospective buyers away.

Many left Cubase to use Live 4 because of the overblown approach to music making that using too many windows can offer.

For all you Cubase SX users out there it is a feature rich application that probably needs no new major features... the 800+ page manual certainly gives this impression. I have friends who happily use Cubase SX of even Cubasis to produce. So I am not knocking Cubase for the sake of it...

It's just great to see some real competition for the big boys finally.Sonar is probably the most likely application to attempt to lure Live 4 users away with a possibly revamped Cyclone DXi it's not Live 4 but sitting in something as featured as Sonar its a nice option.Maybe if Cakewalk really do something big with this then Live 4 users may be tempted but I somehow doubt that *any* Live 4 users will be switching sequencers any time soon 8)

Live 4 users are now on an upgrade path to Live 5 and I must say that has to be a fantastic prospect.

With PDC and more FX and Intruments in Live 5 we may very well have one sequencer that can handle Live use and studio work in one! :-o :-o :o

I think the release of Live 4 caught the big boys napping personally... suddenly they realised that feature count is not everything...workflow, ease of use and an environment that is fun to work in can be a much bigger draw.

We all have front row seats to see how it all pans out, one thing for sure...a dwindling number of people are heading for £500 packages to make music whatever the magazines say. There asking questions on KVR about the big 3 and being told try Tracktion and EXT save the rest of your budget for a good sound card or something.

I am just glad to know there are alternatives and that making music and keeping up with technology does not have to cost hundreds of pounds! No question about it we are witnessing a shift in market share here.If Logic 7, Sonar 4 and Cubase SX 3 do not even attempt to provide better value for money and ease of use then I think it will play very nicely into the the smaller developers hands, and make investing money in Tracktion and EXT a very simple choice.

Bring it on Jules :box:

Oh? Where did you here that?

If the internet did not exist the Big 3 could get away with it.

No way. They'd never be able to distribute updates for their ultra-buggy products. People would wisen up very quickly

Hmmmm

Probably no way of finding out but I wonder

How many cubase users? (my guess: a lot)
How many cracked cubase users? (my guess: more than above)
How many logic users? (my guess: a lot)
How many cracked logic users? (my guess: more than above)
How many Sonar users? (my guess: a lot)
How many unlisenced sonar users? (my guess: more than above)
How many Tracktion users? (my guess: quite a few and rising)
How many cracked Tracktion users? (my guess: none)
How many energyXT users?
How many unliscenced energyXT users? (my guess: v.few)

Now it gets interesting...

How many former cubase/logic/sonar users now using Tracktion/EXT? (my guess: quite a few)

How many former cracked cubase/logic/sonar users now using (paid for) Tracktion/EXT? (my guess: quite a f**king few and at least one)

Moral? A friend of mine is now clean of cracked stuff and very happy with her paid for software.

I think you've hit the nail on the head with that one. I gave up on Sonar because it tries to pack everything in and this gets in the way of my work flow. Live 4 is so easy to use and I get much better results out of it. It has gapless audio so I can insert and delete audio, midi, synths, fx while it is in play back. I can create different mixes on the fly. It's crashed only once in the last few weeks where as this was an almost daily event with Sonar. I believe I could rely on Live 99% of the time in a live setting - I would never trust Sonar in a live situation.

Even if Sonar incorporated the best elements of Live 4 I would not go back to it. Less = more IMO from now on. I'm fed up with lots of windows and features I don't need. I guess that's why Tracktion is so popular with many of you. It's simplicity and single interface is its strength not a weakness.

I know this is the Tracktion forum but considering the title of the thread I thought I'd report on Live in use. Yossarian, consider trying the Live 4 demo because I think you might not need SX any longer or perhaps less frequently. I use Sonar to record vocals and instruments still because Live is better at recording short clips. Otherwise I would never use Sonar at all now. The big hosts are stuck - they can't change drastically enough to suit the new ways that people are making music. Long live the small developers who have sussed out that musicians want host interfaces that work as instruments not dry data entry hosts.

Whats not funny however is paying 500 dollars for an app, just to realize you like using the $80 dollar app much better. Like a friend of mine did. :D

People go thru their phases... maybe they'll just keep lurking, and eventually realize that they will just have to dish out the cash. Afterwhich they will appreciate it that much more... or at least I'd hope so...

Good point. But if Tracktion and EXT did not exist: Would I still be using the cracked shite?
Probably. I can't afford £400 for a host. I'm unemployed.
No excuse? f**k off! I've broken bigger laws and my concience is clean. Now my hard-drive is clean too!

edit: As for your guy. The stupidity of actually asking someone!! That deserves a lesson. I can confess fully to my crimes cos I aint doing them anymore. Only steinberg on this machine is the VSTSDK.
