Just in case not everyone is overwhelmed by the quality of FinalMix (surely not :o ), and have not come across this, try some outstanding donationware:

Check out Energize - it makes CDs loud.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've had a look, and I will continue delving into FinalMix for a while yet.

On a side note, and a point I've made already-- surely people interested in mastering must realize that it takes more than clicking a few presets to test out FM's potential? It's like there's a bandwagon of FM haters, none of which have actually spent any quality time with the plugin.

Also, louder does not equal better. Often, it just means squashed dynamics and making your ears tired.

Often? People are very confused as to what they want/think these plugins are supposed to do.
Every day takes figuring out all over again how to f#ckin’ live.

I wonder what got this louder-is-better thing started in the first place. Sure, a certain amount of compression can spice up the sound and stuff but beyond that it just f**ks up the dynamics.

In 5 years we will all be listening to 3.5 minute long pitchmodulating square waves at -1 db, if the trend continues.

I totally agree - I am first to admit I have not given FM a chance. I would welcome some pointers as to how to use it properly...maybe it is just a case of experimenting.

Interesting website, even if it's not an exhaustive source. In the splash page animated pic, I figure 1995 is about as squashed as I'd care for.

In the list of squashed CD's, it's finally a clue as to why I enjoy Audioslave (self-titled) and Californication (RHCP) but can't listen to the whole album front-to-back. OK, it's possible that some of the actual songs are culprits, but the squishiness doesn't help. I DO find I get 'tired' listening to Audioslave, and I made that observation before even considering that the compression might be partially to blame.

Very cool site. The guy articulates exactly what I was thinking.

f**k! So THATS why Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is my fave album. And thats why in theory I love audioslave but can't be arsed listening to them!

Think I'll become a compression spotting twat!

Finally, I will have an audience for my music! It's hard being ahead of your time. It's also hard being a 4-armed man in a town of amputees, 'cause they're all jealous.
