Sylenth 1 has a particular sound I happen to like

So the guy wants to replace Sylenth1 with Hive and all the party is arguing which one of almost identical synths has better filters...

My answer is: there are at least dozens of more interesting synths you should try instead.

FWIW, I find the filters on most soft synths to be meh. My personal favorite filter is from the Korg MS 20. To me, that's a great soft synth filter. In fact, I can't tell the soft synth from the real thing. Yeah, the GUI is a bit of a train wreck and could really use an update but sound wise, very few synths have filters even close to that good to my ears, not necessarily less technically accurate.

Other filters I like a lot

Sunrizer - This one really surprised me. My personal favorite part of the synth

ArcSyn - This whole synth surprised me with how different it sounds

Diva - I'm not as wild about it as some others but it's still good to my ears

Omnisphere 2 - Again, not as wild about them as some others but also good sounding

Reaktor Based Synths - Some of these are just plain wicked sounding to me.

Softube Modular - For me, only downside to this synth is how slowly they're putting out new modules. When this has a really nice collection of modules, assuming development continues by them and 3rd party developers, this could turn out to be the best sounding synth of all for me.

XILS 4 - Synth is a PITA to program and extremely time consuming. But, for me, it really captures the sound of the original hardware. It was my first XILS synth.

Everything else is okay to decent, to my ears anyway. But very few soft synths blow me away. The MS 20 is still the one to beat for me. Some are close, but only close.

Again, all of the above is just my unprofessional and totally meaningless opinion.

YMMV so simply listen and judge for yourselves.

No man, there's no argument really. Hive has better filters, but, I don't think that everyone prefers those filters. This thread makes that case. This is not an endorsement of Hive, I passed on it.

Define "better" please. If you mean "technologically advanced", yes, agreed. Sorry to pick on it again, but, we should really get away from that "better" <-> "worse" kind of thing. Every analog synth build nowadays is technically "better" than the stuff built back in the days, yet, the amount of people really prefering the newer stuff is probably not so big. At least that's what i always gather. Even with VA synths, which really should be better, it's like that. Why, if the stuff nowadays is so much "better"?

The background pad on the Chill Out audio is nice :tu:
It is always interesting to see what a wide variety of sounds S1 can make, despite the supposedly simple architecture. Covers pretty much all important late 70s and early 80s sounds.

So, what is the better filter worth when people don't think it sounds better to them?

Some people will think it sounds better and some people won't. Just like everything else in life. Not everybody loved the Beatles.

a long time ago i demo'ed it and was messing around with spire around the same time and never made up my mind about it.... I loved it but always got that feeling.... hmmm do i really need it?!? :help:

I know black friday is gone but does U-He make any deals usually? i have the notion they hardly ever make deals on their synths....

Like i've said i've demo'ed it and demoing it again now and i'm like... hmmm i think i really want this :x
and to finish it off; do you have anything that you feel it could replace hive? in VST world?
Check out all these tracks made only with Hive, then demo it once more, and decide for yourself.

Dunno about the Beatles. But since you mention artists. Some people say Classical music is better than other music because it is more sophisticated. And maybe it's true, in theory. But many people consider it cold and boring.

Thank you for making my point for me.
