In re, app image. Interesting. Why don't you send this suggestion, at least to try it to Dom? There's a chance he might miss it here.

Done - sent something to tech support and posted it on Q&A section as well. Figure the more feedback they get the better.
It would be interesting to know the breakdown of downloads for the 3 platforms.
I imagine their Linux market is small but having an easy to install package might encourage more Linux users to try it.

Dom replied back to my inquiry. It's on the 'wishlist'.
I don't think they understand the concept behind AppImage.
Dom said: "Providing installers for other distros creates additional work and could cause confusion of users regarding the supported distros. "
But the whole point of something like AppImage is so they *wouldn't* have to provide multiple installers - just one. So in theory it would be the same amount of work they do now for one distro (Ubuntu) with the benefit of supporting more than just Ubuntu.
If you are interested in seeing a cross distro Linux installer for Linux I would suggest emailing support@bitwig.com and adding your request to the wishlist as well.

Well, after some dependencies and many tries of installing the .rpm generated by "alien", I've managed to install Bitwig 8-track with these commands, got from the Tracktion FAQ post:
It's possible than instead of data.tar.lzma it's a .tar.gz for Bitwig .debs, but it worked for me. It's a brute force method, but the dependencies after doing that were less than the reported ones if trying to install by .rpm. I don't know if it was because I had installed some after hours of mangling with the generated .rpm package, but I don't mind, it's installed
How is the official support for RPM doing?
Code: Select all
ar xv packageName.deb
sudo tar xvf data.tar.lzma -C /How is the official support for RPM doing?

I like the appimage proposal but, IMHO, we should use something more mainstream.
The gnome project supports Flatpak. There is, also, snap.
I think we're better off with one of those.
I'm a gnome fan so I would be interested in working on a Flatpak package.
The main problem is that ffmpeg in bitwig is lagging behind. Fedora and Gentoo's versions are newer. With Flatpak this problem disappears. You can package it with its own ffmpeg version. This applies for all libraries as well. Optimal for every 3rd party developer.

If somebody could get some Bitwig dev to read onto http://flatpak.org/index.html#features
In the meantime, I will try to move my efforts to maintain the Gentoo overlay for BitwigStudio into a Flatpak.
