Few songs have intros as such, thus they always strike out, like with Foreigner's (or rather Thomas Dolby's) famous intro on I've been waiting for a girl like you.
How do I get Van Halen "Jump" sound?

He played all of the keyboard parts on Foreigner 4. He also played keys on Def Leppard's Pyromania album (under a different alias).deastman wrote:Wait, Thomas Dolby played on that Foreigner song? They would hate J.S. Bach - Sonata and Fugue in D minor, just because it is so popular...

Anyone here who would hate the Master's D minor Fuge is an obvious musical charlaran!!!!! Just my personal opinion, of course. LOLMutant wrote:Some people are just like that.wagtunes wrote:I don't understand all the hatred of "Jump"

Nonsense, you're projecting. People hate it because as far as synth music goes it simply wasn't new or interesting in any way and comes across as either an attempt to remain relevant or a flirtation with a new toy. The song was really only popular because Van Halen was popular.Mutant wrote:Some people are just like that.wagtunes wrote:I don't understand all the hatred of "Jump"

By 1984 new wave and synthpop had a deep foothold and I quite remember at the time that people who were very much into new wave, and had been so for years, laughed at Eddie's flirtation with synthesizers. His attempt is as hamfisted as that kid who always played smoke on the water in music stores. It was pretty obvious that he had just discovered this new thing, like your grandmother suddenly becoming a rapper. Compared to efforts by established synthpop and newwave artists at the time it simply sounds clumsy and stupid. It's exactly what you'd expect from the Beavis and Butthead of rock and roll. Nobody denied EVH's talent on guitar, but those few clunky chords on a synthesizer preset are not the synth equivalent regardless of how many ditzy teenage girls suddenly discovered that they now liked synthesizers.
It's pretty obvious that it's a basic open filter sound on a contemporary synth of the day so I have no idea why people are fascinated with it. The masses that liked the song at the time will be convinced by virtually anything when you play along to their drunken pseudo-dancing cum mating ritual.
Essentially, for many, Jump is the synth equivalent to this, which, judging by the sound of the crowd, is also pretty popular.

It's Tocatta and Fugue (not Sonata)...Mutant wrote:Some people are just like that.wagtunes wrote:I don't understand all the hatred of "Jump"

Well, I guess I'm just a simple idiot because I liked it. I thought it was catchy (the riff itself) and the song itself cool. In fact I used to make my own surveys back then like WABC (yes, I was a real nerd) and "Jump" was my 14th favorite song of 1984.ghettosynth wrote:Nonsense, you're projecting. However, THIS "Jump" was my 4th favorite song of the year.
