HI Uncle E,

Is the quote below (from the "Bargains Only" thread) accurate, or is it a mistake?

I sure hope that it is accurate, but it does not seem consistent with VSL's "buy $300 worth of libraries and get a free MIRx roompack" promotion. My fingers are crossed, though….

Thanks!

The $105 deal is just the player. That usually comes free with a library. It seems to be an updated version with some extra abilities.

Hi dzilizzi,

The Vienna Instruments player does come free with VSL sample purchases. The for-purchase Vienna Instruments PRO player which is on sale now has many other features, including enveloped time stretching (so that you can, say, leave the attack of a note as it is, stretch the sustain portion, and tighten up the release tail), humanization and randomization (for making a section out of one instrument, etc.), DFD streaming settings (so you can free up RAM if using a SSD), polyphonic legato, and several other features.

MIRx is a very "lite" version of MIR, the spatialization and reverb convolution processor, with the halls/scoring stages sold "a la carte," and with a greatly reduced control set. MIRx used to work with only the Vienna Instruments PRO player, but now it also works with the free (with VSL sample purchase) Vienna Instruments player. Either way, MIRx only works with VSL instruments (unline MIR and MIR24, which you can send any audio through).

I think that Uncle E's statement in the other thread is incorrect; I don't think you get a free MIRx room with the purchase of Vienna Instruments PRO; I think you only get the free MIRx if you buy $300 in VSL *instruments* (not software) in one order, which is what the VSL site says. I would still like it if Uncle E would clarify his remark in the other thread, because if what he stated there is true, it's an incredible value.

The problem with MIRx is that you can't insert any effects between the sample and the reverb, or route it with sends as you would normally do.

I thought it was a modified orchestra and got all excited only to find it was "just a player." :dog:

It doesn't help me much, I only have percussion and really basic at that. I can't justify the cost as a hobbyist for the really good stuff.

The "VSL Special Editon Volume 1 Section - Woodwinds" and the "VSL Special Editon Volume 1 Section - Brass" are less than 60 bucks each in the cart at AudioDeluxe. They are excellent (in my opinion, they are the good stuff, and I have much more expensive orchestral virtual instruments to compare them to). They are very well recorded and edited, and give you just the most important articulations including true legato, short notes, sustains, and sforzandos for all of the orchestral wind instruments that you'll really need. They do include the free player. You do need a Vienna or Steinberg e-licenser (around $25 last time I bought one) though. Spend $1 on the Sonivox Orchestral Companion Strings at PluginBoutique (yes, they're missing dynamic layer crossfading for dynamics, but hey; it's a buck!), and you'll have the start of a very good orchestra for about $115 (plus the e-licenser if you don't have one).

If that's too much to spend, you just missed a VSL special edition sale, which will come back again. Even cheaper, if you have Kontakt, for $0 you can check out BigCat Instruments for lots of freebies, some of which are orchestral instruments.

Sorry if this is a hijack, but I do think the products I've mentioned are bargains. Just trying to help dzilizzi get started with orchestral instruments.
