Tracktion works fine with my rubbish laptop, but it crackles on my proper computer!!! Audiophile 2496 soundcard etc ... any suggestions?

Strangely, Tracktion plays the preview of wave files fine, without glitches, but when you actually play the wave file within the song then everything crackles.(oh, and it crackles when there is only 1 wave file playing and nothing else)

And I've tried adjusting latency etc,

prior to using Tracktion I was using Cubasis and Magix Music, without problems, no crackles or glitches??? What's the differencce with Tracktion? It's a real shame cos I thought Tracktion would be so much better than those other two budget progs.

If anybody is using the Audiophile with success, please let me know if you had problems and have now sorted them .... so I can

I've got a Via motherboard which I know is not very good, but why does it work with Cubasis/Logic???

Am I going to have to get a new soundcard?? What is verybody else using.

I run Tracktion with an Audiophile 2496, and I have zero problems with it. Do you have the latest drivers?

Post

Have you done all your updates with your motherboard?(chipset drivers and software? and BIOS) Maybe traction uses resources different than your previous programs? And your latest audiophile drivers
I know what you mean about "Bloody computers ..... the cause more grief than pleasure it feels" Ahh but think of all the cool FREE vsts out there.
Hope you get it sorted out

Audiophile 2496 - been using it without problems for a year or more with Tracktion.

Nothing special with my setup, Win2K, 2496PCI, ASIO latency at 5.8 ms (2.9 is fine, I just don't need it).

Are you using the PCI audiophile or the USB one?
Someone shot the food. Remember: don't shoot food!

I have an M Audio 2496 working just fine with Tracktion.

I did have some cracks and pops with the M Audio card when I first installed it, but my problems were really specific to my hardware setup (Nvidia NForce2 w/ an onboard SATA controller.) I doubt my experiences will be much help to you, except that PCI latency may have something to do with it. Difficult to say without more info.

If it works with your laptop, I'm imagining you have USB. FWIW, I use the PCI version with no problems.

I've noticed in a lot of recent threads that video cards, strangely enough, can be the culprit. However, since you had no problem with other hosts, I'm not certain.

In "Settings-->Audio Devices" try toggling ASIO direct mode to see if it makes a difference. Other than that, you've already tried backing off the latency settings... but did you go full-out? Go for a setting that you wouldn't really want to record with, and see if the crackling stops. If it does, then you've likely found your culprit. Then slowly decrease latency until it starts up again.

As you say, it works fine on your 'rubbish' laptop, so that leads me to believe there's other hardware in your desktop that's causing a conflict.

Oh, and if it's a Pentium 4, you can't lose by at least trying "Add low-level noise to avoid denormalization" in the Plugins part of Settings.

thankyou for all your replies, kind of you to do so

it's a PCI card, and I had suspected my S3 graphics card, but same problems with an Nvidia TNT card, but maybe this could be something ... from brass_screen

I will try reinstalling Windows today, and try to follow M-Audio's tip on crackles

oh, I've tried the latest drivers and actually the very latest produce no sound!!! But 5.0036 or whatever are the same as 5.00027, if that means anything to anybody!!!

Maybe a Emu404 beckons, I'd thought about one anyway ... but then I'd read about problems with them too !!!! Nothing ever really works perfectly in the computer world does it??? You always trade off one problem for another I reckon

anyway, thanks again for taking the time to reply

Yup. I'm blessed that my system's so stable (still has the occasional niggle, it's not perfect) and I'm afraid to upgrade. :D Getting up into the CPU usage sometimes, tho. :(

well, after a reinstall, with XP Pro with SP1, and using the drivers that came with my Audiophile card (5.00027), and the latest 4in1 Via drivers, no crackles!!!! So hurrah for now

who knows what was to blame, but it works now, so thanks for your help again, and I just posted this info incase anyone else suffers

cheers

p.s. oh, I reckon FinalMix is a great addition and was the thing that made me buy Tracktion, now if Tracktion could record Midi data from Groove Agent directly without having to render, and could then be as easy to edit as Cubase then it'd be the perfect program, but that will never exist ... but for £44.79 (according to my credit card bill) it's bloody great, and I think it's the best looking sequencer there is as opposed to many others

phew

Glad to hear you got it sorted out. I went against my usual mantra of "don't f--- with it if it's working fine" and installed the latest VIA 4-in-1 as well.

Now you just need to finish a tune and post it up. Make sure to put a link in the Tracktion in Action thread, too. :D

crackles back!! bugger ... don't know why, but I've prdered a new motherboard, cos I reckon that's where the problems lay, it comes on Tuesday, so we'll see then. My old motherboard was a VIA chipset board, and only had 2 PCI slots, which meant I could never get the 2496 card on it its own IRQ

Welcome aboard.

Like you, I struggled on with Magix for some time, but Tracktion is so much more productive. The Forum is great as well (well at least since Tractionfest!!!)

I have had very similar problems using a Layla 24 on an apple powerbook. I have found some relief recently from (oddly enough!) just toggeling the digital mode from spdif rca to spdif optical... even though I rarely use either.

Tracktion is a great program, but it does have an odd amount of clicking and pops from time to time. I too never had these problems with Cubase, but Cubase was such a nightmare otherwise I rather use Tracktion. It's such a great program I really hope they iron out the little kinks and bugs just a little more.

I've never had any problems. :? Not that I'm saying YOU haven't, because obviously you have; however, I'd hesitate to call it a "bug" when it's something that's particular to your system(s).

First I would make sure the latency is not set to low.
Just set it very high for testing purposes.
Next I would make sure nothing essential is running in the background.
And finally I would set the color setting to 16 bit.
I found that the "true color" 32 bit setting is taking a lot of resources across the board without creating anything needed as far as music creation.
This also helped me with other unrelated problems like Video Conferencing.
