Hello!
I have a new commission and am looking for sounds like Univrs by Alva Noto.
Here's a link:
This seems like a great excuse to finally get Bazille and get nerdy with sound design, but I'd like your input.
Are there any soundbanks or individual presets that come to mind? It's such cool music.
Thanks,
Ben

This is experimental IDM music made from sound design and I'm quite sure Alva Noto makes all sounds himself.
The bleeps you can make with synths and the noisy percussion beats you make out of recording found sounds and manipulating them with effects and samplers. Not sure if you can find these in soundbanks, but you never know.

Xenos' Mindhacker's Notebook definitely comes to mind first:
Compositionally the demo doesn't sound too much like Alvo Noto but listen out for the little bits in each demo all made using the soundbanks with no additional effects....

Bazille strikes me as wild overkill for the sounds Alva.Noto uses. His sound palette has been mostly fixed throughout his career - sine waves, ultrashort loops, filtered noise, reverb, bitcrush. The addition of a handclap like timbre to his palette around the time of Univrs felt like an earth shattering addition! For me, there's only really SND who can match him in terms of maintaining their ability to consistently surprise across decades using such a small 'core' sound palette.
For me, I'd be doing this kind of thing with sampling rather than synthesis. Micro-sized noise loops, quick-cut composites of filtered noise timbres spliced end up end to make the clappy sounds - I feel like sampling is a huge part of the sterility and monochronicity of his palette. Every hit sounds exactly the same, every time.
'Pure ' synthesis seems like a rather unwieldly and inefficient way to achieve this stuff.

Wow, fantastic response! Very detailed and articulate. Thank you.
I love nerding out with synth and samplers, but I'm on a major deadline with this project and need all the help I can get. Do you know of any sample based soundsets that get close?

Was actually thinking about this today - I reckon SoundMorph's Galactic Assistant could be perfect for generating those tiny micro samples a la Alvo's tracks: https://www.soundmorph.com/product/5/galactic-assistant
